An Open Letter To My Future Self

I hope you're a better version of me.

"I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds my future."

In schools all around the world students are being asked, "where do you see yourself in 10 years?" We've all heard it and we've all tried to conquer it with the perfect answer and fill our future with happiness and success, but at the end of the day we have no idea where we will be 6 months from now much less in 10 years.

Dear Future Self,

Our past has been filled with speed bumps and road blocks galore. Many mistakes, hardships, rejections, failures, and heartbreaks that we didn't understand at the time. There are things going on in life right now that I still don't understand and that I am so hurt by, but by the time you read this, I know you will have overcome these things and will be 10x the person I am right now. Always remember that bad times make the good times better.

Remember all the times you were ready to give up? All the times you felt as if you were standing still in life and felt as though it was drowning you? Oh, and don't forget all the times you let people walk all over you and were too scared to let them go? Look how far you have come. I imagine you to be the best version of myself.

As you read this I hope you know that whatever you're experiencing is because of the choices I'm making right now. I hope you have found happiness and love who you are.. (I promise I'm working on that right now!!!) I hope you haven't lost your faith and always keep God first.. never stray because we've seen where that leads.

I hope you have learned the accept that not everyone has the same heart as you and as tough as it may be, sometimes you have to let go of the people that mean the most to you because they drag you down. (I'm working on this too). But never stop loving the way you do, because when you love.. you give it all you've got.. you just gave to the wrong people.

No matter what people throws at me, I remember that this is God's plan to help me grow into who I need to be and who you are today. I look forward to becoming you. The thought of growing into someone who can stand up for herself, love herself, and be truly happy is so exciting.

This journey we call life is crazy beautiful, so never forget to stop and enjoy life. Keep hiking, keep going to concerts, keep molding your heart because it is so big and full of love. When you read this, the person I am now will be just a memory, but never forget how you became who you are. I don't know where you are in life or what you're doing or who you're doing life with, but I'm still you.

I'm okay, and you will be too.

I can't wait to meet you/be you.

From,

Past Self

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
