Just remember the saying, “You never truly know someone until you’ve lived with them.” Ain't that the truth? No matter what year you are or whether your roommate is a random or your best friend, you will experience a different type of “relationship” once you live together. Spending roughly 10 months with a person in a limited amount of space, all hours of the day is really a test of your sanity.
From my experience, there are a few things you might want to warn your future roommate about before your both enclosed in the same prison cell.. I mean room.
1. Don’t touch my food.
Talk about a nightmare. What feeling could be worse than being all excited to go home and munch on your favorite snack and then realizing it isn't there. You eventually learn to come up with secret hiding spots because who wants to go through that again.
2. Never wake me up.
In college you learn to cherish every second of sleep. Nothing made me more convinced that violence was the answer than my roommate coming home at 4 a.m. and trying to have a conversation with me. Or when she would binge-watch Netflix and have the computer brightness on full blast. Our nights would always end with one or the other.
3. Pants aren't happening.
This might not be my actual home, but I sure as heck am going to make it feel like it. What girl doesn't love to walk around in a large tee and underwear in the confines of her own living space? Your random roommate might have to get used to this at first, but trust me, it'll just bring you two closer.
4. I'm very stubborn.
Nothing feels quite like independence until you have the freedom to decide whether or not to make your bed, and the answer is always no. I have never truly understood the reasoning behind making a bed you will lay in any chance you get. If you get one of those OCD clean- freak type of roommates, I pray for you.
5. You will be my therapist.
Now that I'm hundreds and possibly thousands of miles away from my family and friends, the least you could do is listen to my daily rant. Whether it comes to the complaints about the dining hall food or the never-ending boy drama, just remember that you’ll know basically everything about me in less than a month.
6. We will be best friends.
Being college roommates is much more than living together. Having a roommate you could go to class with, get lunch and party with? That's someone who could be a friend for a lifetime. Look at all those wedding movies, for example. Who else would be your bridesmaid?
