Of course, we can't control what our offspring is, but if I do have a little girl, there are a few things I want her to know, just like my mom made sure I knew as I got older.

You don't need make-up.

Sweetheart, as you get older, you will feel the need to wear makeup and experiment, which is fine. I want you to always remember that you don't need it. You will get older and wonder why you wasted time when you were younger messing with your face. I will help you with your eyeliner, and I am definitely letting you go through the blue eyeshadow phase, every girl does. You will have your whole life to worry about makeup and what you look like, so when 13 rolls around, maybe you can put a coat of mascara on.

Be one of the guys

Considering you are most likely going to be a mini me (your poor father), you are going to like sports and you won't let anyone mess with you because you are tough. With that being said, you will be able to keep up with the boys and you might get picked on because you aren't a "girly girl," but I want you to remember that you are steps ahead those other girls. You will like to play outside and be a little of a tomboy, but hey, no girl can throw a baseball like you can.

Cry

You are allowed to be an emotional person. We live in a world where you need to always be tough and not let anything get to you, but cry. You will never get too old to have a good cry. Whether it's because you failed a test, your first love broke up with you, or you are just having a bad day, just cry. You will feel better after, I promise.

I will be your mother before your friend

Get ready, because I will not be the mom that lets their daughter do whatever they want, go out and come home when it's convenient to them, and yes, I will call the other person's house you are going to to make sure that you are welcome. I know there will be days that you will not like me, but I am being a parent, not your BFF. That is my job, and hey, my mother was the same way and I turned out just fine; you will too. So quit the tantrum and get over it. Life is tough and you can't have everything you ask for, so go ahead and stomp up to your room if you desire or be a mature young adult and accept what your father and I tell you.

Nothing good happens after midnight

Say hello to curfew... yep, life sucks, but I am going to tell you the same thing my parents told me. I have to work in the morning and you will be home before your father and I go to bed.. Sorry, sweetheart. I'm not dumb, you don't need to be drinking in a basement... you are better than that.

You will get your heart broken

Your first heartbreak is going to suck. You are going to feel betrayed and that your heart was ripped out of your chest. I understand, I remember mine like it was yesterday, but remember one thing. He wasn't the one, there are other people out there, and there is a guy waiting for you. I will be there to pick you up, and your father will be there to threaten to kill him. It will hurt, but like anything else, it will get better with time.

To my future daughter, we will be strict with you because we want you to be the best person you can be. Life is tough, but your father and I will be there to get you through the good and bad times. Remember to be treated right, and make sure you treat everyone you talk to with the most respect you can give.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
