To the future freshies Nervous for What Is To Come

Coming away to college was the hardest thing in the world. I was so nervous and scared to leave everyone and everything I have ever known to start a new. When choosing colleges I wanted to be able to pick a school where I could start new and grow by myself. This was the hardest thing for me. My first few weeks of college I felt completely alone bouncing from friend to friend. Then I found my people. Looking back that irrational fear was just that irrational. Going to college was the best thing for me. I made friends that I feel closer to then the people I was friends with growing up. Not that I forgot about the people growing up.

Let me just tell you this. If you think senior year was fun just wait until college. College is a whole new world of fun. Yeah, you have to go out on your own and make new friends but that is the best part. One of my favorite things about college is that you have the ability to go out into the world and none of these people know about your past. In a way, it is a clean slate.

I promise you going away to college may not be easy but it is worth it. The best thing that I ever did for myself was come to college and go where no one else has been. I feel like as a person I have now grown so much since high school. Looking back at some of the people I graduated high school with and I feel like a lot of those people would not recognize the person I am today. Sure I am the same loud, happy person but there is so much depth and change underneath of that.

So to the people that are worried college is going to suck. It will not. No matter who you are or where you go you will thrive. Just give the school more of a chance then a semester. Make sure to follow your heart as well. When picking a major it can be extremely demeaning and upsetting to hear that "the only majors that matter are stem and accounting." No matter what major you are whether it is teaching or biology your major is equally as difficult and is equally as important. There is no such thing as a dead end major. If you try hard enough no matter what you do there is a whole world of opportunities out there waiting for you.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
