The Future Of Conference Expansion

Big 12 Expansion will merely be the first in a myriad of dominoes that soon will fall.

The Future Of Conference Expansion
Cincinnati Vs. Everyone

In just a few short months the Big 12 will be announcing the addition of a few new members to their conference. At this point there are a lot of uncertainties. How many teams the league would like to add? Who exactly are those teams? And does Kansas remember how to play football? But, even in the midst of those uncertainties, I believe there is one thing that we can all count on: Expansion will not end with the Big 12. It is my firm belief that Super Conferences will become the norm in college football and I have mapped out exactly what these conferences will look like.

2017

Big 12 expansion concludes by adding not one, not two, not three, not four, but multiple schools. The new Big 12 will feature the additions of: BYU, Houston, Cincinnati, Connecticut, USF, and UCF. With the addition of the six schools the Big 12 will balloon into a sixteen team league with two divisions: North-ish and South

The South Division will feature: Baylor, Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, and BYU. The North-ish division will feature: Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Connecticut, USF, and UCF.

There will be a conference championship game, which will feature the team with the top record from each division. The winner of this game will represent the Big 12 in the Sugar Bowl or the College Football Playoff (CFP).

After a year of these divisions someone will ask, “Hey why don’t we just call the divisions East and West?” And everyone will be like, “Oh. I guess that’s a pretty good idea.”

2019

By this year Texas has expanded the influence of the Longhorn Network. It is no longer just a television channel, it will become an entire Longhorn television, internet, and phone provider. Their new slogan becomes, "Trust us. This will work. Please. It has to work. We've invested too much money for this not to work."

The SEC decides that it wants to become a super conference like the Big 12 (although there are some who will argue that they already are a super conference). But instead of simply adding two members and becoming a 16 member league like the Big 12,the SEC will absorb all ELEVEN members of the Sun-Belt Conference. (25 total teams)

The SEC splits their league into 4 divisions:

-The SEC West and SEC East remain unchanged.

-The SEC Sun Division will feature: Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Monroe, Appalachian State, and Troy.

-The SEC Belt Division will feature: Idaho, Texas State, New Mexico State, Arkansas State, and South Alabama.

The conference championship format for the new look SEC will look relatively unchanged. In addition to an SEC championship game between the East and West division winners, there will also be a sub-championship game between the Sun and Belt division champs. The major difference between these two games is that the sub-championship game is essentially meaningles

The winner of the SEC Championship game will represent the team in the CFP, and the winner of the SEC sub-championship game gets a big ole pat on the back plus an invitation to play in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

2024

In order to ease the financial burden of their increasingly struggling network/internet/telelvision/phone provider service, the LHN trademarks the phrase "tu." The trademark works in such a way that Aggie fans must pay a royalty to the network anytime they use "tu" over social media, on t-shirts, or in every day conversation. This move will make the LHN profitable for the first time since its inception.

The Big 12, ACC, Big 10, and Pac 12 follow in the footsteps of the SEC and absorb a Group of Five conference to become even larger than they were before.

The Big 12 takes the remaining members of the American Athletic conference and the university of Massachusetts (26 teams)

The Big 10 takes the Mid American Conference (26 teams)

The ACC takes Conference USA and Army (28 teams)

The Pac 12 takes the Mountain West (24 teams)

Finally, in an attempt to get an even number of members in their conference (and to add an additional cupcake to their gruesome conference schedule) the SEC adds the Cleveland Browns to the SEC Belt Division.

The CFP expands to include 8 teams, which will feature the five conference champions, the two highest ranked teams that did not win their conference, and North Dakota State.

Clearly the most ludicrous part of this prediction is the idea that the CFP would expand to include more teams.

2030

The Longhorn Network introduces the very first Longhorn phone which has no headphone jack, no screen, only plays cassettes, comes with a pair of roller blades, and is actually just a repurposed Sony Walkman. It is sold at retail value of $1800. It sells out in 3.6 nano seconds.

The SEC decides to bring North Dakota State up from FCS competition into the SEC East. In order to clear up a spot in the East for NDSU, the SEC relegates Vanderbilt to the Belt division. And in order to clear up a spot in the Belt division for Vanderbilt, the SEC relegates the Cleveland Browns to Division III competition.

The Pac 12 and the Big 10 decide that their conferences are simply not big enough. In the fall of 2030, they preform a conference merger to become the Big Pac 50. There will be four divisions: The Big10 Division, The Pac 12 Division, the Mountain West Division, and the MAC division.

In order to determine division champions each division will hold neutral site division championship games. The winner of the MAC and Mountain West divisions will receive participation ribbons and an invitation to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. They won't actually get to play in the bowl game, they just get to take a tour of the facility.

The Pac 12 and Big 10 division champs will go on to play a conference championship game in the Rose Bowl. The winner of the conference championship will represent the conference in the CFP, while the loser has to watch Transformers: Age of Extinction on VCR.

Not to be outdone, the Big 12 and the ACC also perform a merger and becomes the Big Atlantic 12. Much like the Big Pac 50, the new Big Atlantic 12 also features 50 members and four divisions: ACC division, Big 12 division, American Athletic division, and Division USA.

The conference championship consists of a “how many gumballs are in this jar” contest. The team that correctly guesses how many gumballs are in the jar does not win the conference but they DO get to be an honorary captain at the conference championship game. The championship is actually a revamped Red River Rivalry which has expanded to feature Texas, Oklahoma, Florida State, and Clemson playing in a free-for-all four endzone field.

2050

The year is 2050. The three super conferences (SEC, Big Pac 50, and the BA12) decide to officially set aside their differences. In a move that will end conference expansion once and for all, the three merge together to form the very first "mega conference."

Because every team in America is now in one conference, each team has to schedule schools from outside the country in order to beef up their out-of-conference strength of schedule. Somehow Baylor manages to only schedule Middle School pee wee league opponents. The conference champion is no longer decided by a championship game. It will instead be decided by electoral college vote.

The conference champion gets to represent the conference in the CFP presented by the Longhorn Network. Six of the remaining seven spots in the CFP presented by the Longhorn Network will be awarded to the first six teams that can correctly name the 50 state capitals. The final spot is awarded to Texas because ESPN named the Longhorn Network as THE official sponsor of the CFP.In an act of protest against the bias corporate sponsorship, Texas A&M secedes from the Union.

Please do not misunderstand that last part. Texas A&M will not merely secede from the NCAA, they will file paperwork to secede from the United States of America to form their own sovereign nation.

And truth be told... by 2055 they're doing pretty okay. Good for you, A&M.

At the conclusion of the CFP presented by the Longhorn Network, the lone team standing gets an invitation to play in the national championship game...

Against Notre Dame.

This is the only way that conference expansion can unfold. This is where we are headed. This is where it all must come to an end.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
