We all have that one friend who is obsessed with their animals and treats them as if they're their real-life kids. Well, that's me, and I'm happy to walk you through the constant debate of what it is to be a fur mom.
The role of a mother comes in many forms. Motherhood can come from an adoption, being a mother-figure to someone else, and evidently from birth. Although these all originate from different circumstances, there is one thing that stands firm. That is, the love that each of these kinds of mothers have for the one being taken cared of. I may not have kids, but I have two living things to look after, to raise, and to protect.
Give unconditional love
Our fur babies may not always do the right thing. Every time my key turns the lock on the front door, I'm just hoping everything is as it should be and not all over the place. I've had my shoes bitten up, and my makeup brushes gone missing. They might destroy our belongings or do something we've tried so hard to teach them not to do and yet, we love them just as much – always and unconditionally.
In sickness and in health
When they're sick, I'm a mess. They can't express how they're feeling so it's my job to be in tune with them and know when something is wrong. To them, I am their safe haven. They rely on me to be real-life advocate, to stand up for them, watch out for them, and be there for whatever they might need.
Being the mama bear
I dare someone to try and screw with what's mine, they would have to answer to me. You better believe that my home is just as much their home. There will be toys scattered everywhere, and maybe even various bones. The couch is their fortress and so is my bed. Just a few things to keep in mind when visiting my home, I like most humans but I love them.
Endless spoiling
Even if I'm apart from them, there's never a time when they're not on my mind. I can be out doing my life and, I always end up coming home with a gift for them. I'm eager to go home to surprise them with new things, and their just as excited when they receive it. They don't need four different collars, weekly trips to the pet store, and organized play dates. But I choose to spoil them because they are mine to spoil.
The definition of the word mother is, "to look after kindly, and protectively, sometimes excessively so." I am by no means anti-kids or against children, but I am pro-dog. So, yes fur moms are moms too. I may not have a human child (yet), but I have my two fur babies, and I'm learning every day what it's like to be a mom by taking care of them.
