While we all have those classes where we have to read one book a week, it is very important for students to actually set aside time to read for fun.
Now, you might be thinking to yourself, "But Drew, I have so much to read for my classes and there are only so many hours in a day."
Well, fear not, reader. Your friendly neighborhood English major will give you a crash course on time management for a better reading schedule!
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it's always important to get some energy in your body before your day begins. It's also important for your brain to get energy and wake up with the rest of your body to prevent fatigue in those pesky afternoon lectures. Whether that be reading the newest book in your favorite series or picking up the newspaper from your local coffee shop, it will all affect waking up your brain in the mornings.
Other folks might be worried about not being able to pick between going to get those sweet gains at the gym and getting your daily read on. Now, if you can multitask like myself, it will be easy for you to sit on a stationary bike, plan your work out and open up your novel and press on through that tough cardio routine. Another thing I've tried is listening to an audio book only when I'm at the gym so that whenever I get the itch to listen to the narrator read the next bit of the story, I would also have to go work out.
When someone figures out how to attach a book to a barbell, let me know!
Finally, it's also important that you let your brain calm down before going to sleep. A great way to get relaxed is to read a book before bedtime. If that is flipping through your Bible, reading poetry to your fur baby or falling asleep with the book in your hand, you'll calm down your brain enough (unless your reading something terrifying like Stephen King or the news) to be able to get some well deserved rest.
Reading is one of the most amazing things you can do with your life and should not be wasted just reading things for classes. It should also be spent broadening your horizons, exploring new ideas, challenging your own ideas, meeting new friends through book recommendations and enjoying the written word for the magic that it truly is.
Throughout your college career, you're schedule will constantly change and you must change with it. You must adapt to the new classes and new clubs you may be a part of, but you must never forget your book behind because you never know when a good reading opportunity will present itself. In the meantime, read on friends, many lives lay ahead of you just waiting to be lived.
