As a college student, or as just someone who is looking for a job, money is always an issue. When you are someone on a budget, it is hard to do what you want to do on a weekend night or hang out on a whim, trust me, I know.
I am currently someone who is trying to scrape every dollar that I can find to pay for life’s necessities, and it can be a pain sometimes, especially when you are putting in application after application and nothing comes from it.
I believe that my luck will soon change, and until then I have been coming up with ways that I can enjoy life and save money at the same time. Granted, some of these things that I came up with may sound boring to the average person, but it works and I am sure if you were to give it a try, it will not be so bad.
Here are some of the examples of things that I have tried that may work for you.
The first thing that I am doing is instead of hanging out all of the time, like most people my age would like to do no matter if they have the money or not, I take walks around my neighborhood. The benefits that come with it is that you are out of your house, you are getting exercise and of course, you are saving money.
Sometimes, on warm days, I take longer walks to the store or to my friend's house where we would play board games or watch television. Now, I know to you this sounds like a juvenile thing to do, but when you have little money, you feel pretty juvenile, and there is really nothing wrong with that.
There are plenty of people who have to resort to “juvenile” resources in order to live, and in this economy, there are more millennials who have to live on a fixed budget.
The other activity that I do to try to keep my mind off of not having money is attending the gym on a daily basis. Now I know what you may be thinking, this is not saving money because you have to pay monthly for a gym membership, but the key word is monthly.
The monthly payments for the gym are better than what some would pay for a weekly visit to the spa or to a massage table. I say this because a lot of women and some men often take time to go to the spa instead of working out, and do not ask me why this is because I do not know.
I do not think I have to explain what benefits come from working out, but the financial benefits are good because when you work out, you are not spending too much money because you would only spend money on your smoothie, water or a healthy snack.
That is another bonus of working out, you are inclined to eat healthily, and if you go to Trader Joe's, you are not spending an “arm and a leg” on a food bill, trust me, I know, because I shop at Trader Joe's all of the time.
The final thing I do to save money is really not heard of from millennials because we are independent in some areas, and that is when I go out I see if someone can flip my bill.
Now, I do not do this often because my pride will not let me do that, but thankfully, the friends I have do not mind helping me out whenever I need it. I am able to enjoy myself when I am on the dime of others because I do not have to feel bad about it as I know it is from their heart.
The benefits of this activity are pretty obvious because, for one, you are not spending your own money, and two you can go and have fun, and not worry about if you are going over budget or not. The only downside of this is that you eventually have to return the favor to whoever treated you as it is only fair.
For those who are graduating college this year, and do not yet have that “dream job” I hope this helps you as you may have to budget your money to still pay your bills and have some money left over.
I have been budgeting as I go along, and although I am not the best with money, I am definitely learning how as bills are not going to pay themselves. As I go through life, even after I find the job I am looking for, I am still going to budget, of course, because you never know what could happen as time moves along.
