The Hallmark fall activity of walking around a pumpkin patch looking for the perfect pumpkin to make into the scariest Jack-o-Lantern is always fun and should absolutely be on your fall bucket list, but here are 10 other fun fall activities that aren't quite so conventional:

1. Go on a hike.

Fall is one of the best times to go for a hike- the cool air is a lot more pleasant than the summer humidity, and it's freeing to be out among the changing leaves.

2. Make a DIY Halloween costume.

Get creative! Making your own costume is not only cheaper, but it's fun to customize and decorate with a group of friends. Keep it simple or make it fancy with all of the rhinestones you can find. Plus, you can reuse parts of your costume for other things or even other costumes if you're planning on going to a few different Halloween bashes.

3. Have a picnic.

Again, Fall is a great time to be outside! Get some sandwiches and chips and hot cider if it's chilly, and you'll have yourself a lovely afternoon.

4. Bake pies.

While you're at the pumpkin patch, why not pick up a few apples to make into a warm, crispy apple pie? I could eat a whole pie for each meal of the day, but pies with in-season fruits during fall are my absolute favorite.

5. Make a pile of leaves and jump in it.

Don't tell me your inner child isn't bouncing up and down at the thought of this.

6. Go on a shopping spree for summer clothes.

A lot of clothing stores do sales for the end of summer which is a great opportunity to get some cute tops and shorts on for a discount. Many stores put their unsold summer styles on clearance during this time, even if they don't have a featured sale.

7. Stuff a scarecrow.

One of my most memorable elementary art projects was stuffing a scarecrow around Halloween. Looking back, I don't know how our art teacher was able to handle 25 third graders all throwing straw at each other, but somehow all of our scarecrows were assembled and lined up in front of the school in time for the big day. This one's surprisingly fairly easy, and all it requires is some old clothes, straw, a burlap sack, twine, and a few plastic bags. A sweatshirt and jeans work well, and they can be tied at the ends so that the straw doesn't fall out.

8. Paint.

Get your creative juices flowing! The vibrant colors of fall offer some great inspiration for painting or drawing.

9. Go to a haunted house.

This is almost as classic as going to a pumpkin patch, but it had to be mentioned. Whether you're into jump scares or the real horror houses, a haunted house must make the list.

10. TAILGATE.

Football season is HERE, folks, and we can't forget the most important fall activity of all. Tailgating, tailgating, TAILGATING. And that's really what makes fall the best season. Tell me I'm wrong.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
