Raising Edmonton

This time of year, it's hard to find time and money to do things. I spend most of my time in school (only 2 weeks left, thankfully) and at work. The free time that I do have, I want to spend with family, friends, and my significant other. The only problem that arises is finding something to do that won't cost a lot of money. Luckily, cold weather and Christmas season brings lots of fun activities you can do without breaking the bank.

1. Baking cookies

Chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies, or snickerdoodles.. Santa doesn't have to be the only person eating them! Making classic baked goods is always fun, and finding or creating new ones is even better.

2. Watching Christmas movies

Who doesn't love a good Christmas movie? Whether you're watching "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" or "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", you're bound to have a great time. Make some hot cocoa, pop some popcorn, and snuggle up to watch some classic movies.

3. Watching Christmas lights

Lots of local farms host holiday light shows, and if you're lucky, there'll be a neighborhood near you where everyone goes all out to decorate their homes! Honestly, my life goals are to have THAT house on the block that everyone admires during the Christmas season.

4. Ice-skating

Whether or not you know how, ice-skating is always fun. Part of the fun is falling--or watching other people fall! The best part of ice-skating, though, is warming up afterwards with a cup of hot coffee or hot chocolate.

5. Playing in the snow

If you have enough snow, going out to play is always great! Sledding down hills in your neighborhood and decorating snowmen with old hats and scarves can bring lots of laughter to you and your loved ones. Just watch your back, though. Someone's bound to start a snowball fight!

6. Watching holiday productions

Most high schools will host a holiday play or musical, and admission is never too expensive. Not only do you get to enjoy a show, you also get to support your local students!

7. Gingerbread houses

If you're confident in your baking skills, you could bake a gingerbread house to decorate. But if you're like me, you'll probably buy a gingerbread kit from your local Target and decorate it. You can decorate one with family, or you could make it a competition!

8. Making DIY gifts

I love giving gifts, but my bank account doesn't feel the same way. I love to make my own gifts for people! From crocheted scarves to picture frames, your loved ones will love the time and effort you put into their presents.

9. Volunteer at hospitals or homeless shelters

The best part of the Christmas season is giving! Although giving gifts can be fun, donating your time to people who really need it is even better. Lots of homeless shelters and hospitals look for volunteers, especially around this time of year. Putting a smile on someone's face may be the best part of Christmas!

10. Singing Christmas songs

I've been listening to Christmas music since November 1st, but that doesn't matter. Christmas music brings people together!

11. Making new traditions

Although you could do all these things and have lots of fun, making new holiday memories and traditions can make your holiday season that much better. Have fun sharing lots of laughter!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. You feel like you will have never-ending classwork to catch up on if you miss class, so you end up going sick and then it just takes longer to get better. Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
