Winter can be pretty, but it’s no fun when you’re stuck inside all day! Sometimes it’s too cold to go outside and enjoy the snow. Here are some things you can do when you’re snowed over break.

1. Clean the house

This is one activity your parents will definitely approve of. Cleaning doesn’t have to be boring. You can put on your favorite music and jam out while you’re cleaning! Cleaning can be great exercise and it leaves your house sparkling. What’s not to like?

2. Read a book

Maybe you were too busy in the school year to really enjoy a good book. Now’s the perfect time. You could read one of the classics, like Pride and Prejudice. You could re-read the Harry Potterbooks (again). Or, you could pick up a brand new book and dive in. Books are a great escape from everyday stress.

3. Binge watch

Winter break is a great time to catch up on your favorite shows. When classes are going on, sometimes you’re too busy to watch your favorite shows. When you’re at home, you have a lot of free time, and you probably won’t be outside too much in the winter. Winter break is the perfect opportunity to relax on the couch, grab some snacks, and catch up on all your favorite shows.

4. Play with your pets

Unless you work in an animal shelter, you probably didn’t see too many dogs or cats when you were away. Your pets missed you while you were away, so spend some quality time with them! You can play fetch with your dogs, take your bird out of its cage, or snuggle with your cat. Spend some quality time with your pets while you’re inside.

5. Bake cookies

This one is a personal favorite. When it’s cold out, what better way to warm up than by making some delicious treats? You could make an old family favorite or try a new recipe. Not good with baking? Buy some pre-made dough and just bake it in the oven. Baking cookies is a great activity if you have little siblings running around.

6. Have a holiday movie marathon

My family has a whole collection of Christmas movies that we watch every year. See if you have any holiday movies at your house and make your own marathons. Some cable TV stations have nonstop Christmas movie marathons during the holiday season (Lifetime Movie Network is a personal favorite). Some streaming services also have holiday movies available. You can cozy up with a blanket and watch all your childhood favorites.

7. Pick up a new hobby

Knitting isn’t just for grandmas. Being snowed in gives you plenty of time to learn something new. Try your hand at knitting, crocheting, or sewing. It keeps your hands busy, and in the end you’ll have a nice blanket or a hat.

8. Catch up on sleep

This is also a personal favorite. Chances are you didn’t make it through your school year without pulling at least one all-nighter. When you’re at home, you’re less busy and you’re under less pressure to go out every night. Winter break can be a perfect opportunity to get your sleep schedule back in check. You can go to bed early, wake up later, or both! Your body will thank you.

Winter break doesn’t have to be boring. Even when you’re snowed in, you can still have fun. So grab a book, cuddle up with your pet, put on some music and enjoy!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
