Female NFL fan here ready to talk about Ray Rice and the horrible video released of him hitting his fiancé turned wife, Janay Rice, in that elevator.
I’m not here trying to sound like a broken record and write another article about domestic violence and how terribly wrong it is, but we should all know by now it was utterly wrong and unacceptable. A man should never hit a woman. End of story. As an NFL fan, I am a little skeptical about how the league and NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, has handled it.
The first video that surfaced showed Rice literally dragging his unconscious fiance, now wife, out of the elevator. Well, if that wasn’t a red flag, then someone please enlighten me with what would be. The original punishment initiated on Rice was a two-game suspension. It was basically a slap on the wrist.
That’s when 'stuff' hit the fan, especially for the female audience of the NFL. As more developing news came out into the open, it was the second video from the elevator of Rice actually punching Janay that sent fans into a frenzy.
Apparently, Commissioner Goodell said he and the NFL had never seen that second video of Rice physically hitting her until that day it was released. Yet he thought the first one of Rice dragging her out of the elevator was okay? Well no sir, I don't think so.
As if Goodell hadn’t already dug himself in a hole, it got even worse when it came out that Rice actually informed Goodell in June that he had, in fact, hit his wife. Let that sink in a little bit, people. It is now September. It seemed that Goodell was trying to ruin Rice’s credibility, but now it looks like the tables have turned.
Rice has practically lost everything ranging from an endorsement deal with Nike to being pulled out of EA Sports Madden15 video game. Pretty much all he can do, now, is tell the truth. Well, that truth is coming to bite commissioner Roger Goodell in the butt.
Attempting to do damage control, Goodell introduced new sanctions in the case of domestic violence where the first offense will result in a six-game suspension and a second offense will result in banishment from the league. According to ESPN, he has acknowledged he did not to see a video of Rice hitting his wife to determine a suitable punishment. A little too late, commissioner.
The spotlight is, unfortunately, on you and the league now and how you decided to handle this whole ordeal. I hate to break it to you, but admitting, “I didn’t get it right,” might lead to getting replaced by someone who will get it right and not overlook something that is such an issue in today’s society. Let the interview process begin, because it is not looking like NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, will be scoring any touchdowns in this game.
