Friday, February 26, 2016 marked a special day, the release of "Fuller House" on Netflix. It's been 20 years since we've heard from the Tanner family, it's about time we had a reunion. Growing up "Full House" was always one of my favorite shows because it had the perfect combination of humor, cheesy family moments, and abundant Uncle Jesse screen time. It was the kind of show that was just a pure joy to watch. It didn't need violence or wizards to captivate audiences. We watched "Full House" because it was about a family just like ours.
Maybe we didn't have a dad that shared Danny Tanner's love of cleaning, or an uncle who loved Elvis quite as much as Uncle Jesse did, but that wasn't the point of the show. We were introduced to the Tanner family as they were in the midst of trying to put their lives back together after Danny lost his wife and his daughters lost their mother. Yet out of such a heartbreaking start came a series that consistently made you smile, and made you want to hug your own family that much tighter. The point of "Full House" was to remind us of how important family is, and I'm incredibly excited that "Fuller House" is finally here to teach that lesson to the next generation.
When February 26 finally came, I was ecstatic because I realized I could open my computer and finally see the Tanner family again. I was surprised by the new Carly Rae Jepsen version of the theme song, but I quickly felt myself starting to love it, and I haven't gotten it out of my head since. As the characters that I've grown up watching reappeared around Danny Tanner's spotless kitchen table, I knew I was in for something great. It's incredibly cheesy and predictable, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
The show is not about surprising you, it's about reminding you of what's important in life. As Stephanie stepped up and decided that helping her sister was more important than her career, I instantly thought of my own sisters and what I would do if they needed me like DJ needed her sister. That combination of corny family lessons and adorably hilarious kids is back. Watching "Fuller House" is an absolute joy. It's sappy but honest and emotional. It's funny but smart and thought-provoking. It's the comeback we've been waiting for.
