To The Woman Who Told Us To 'Get Over' Her Support Of Trump, Practice What You Preach

A few days ago, I was scrolling through Facebook when a fellow creator's article caught my attention: "I Am A Proud Donald Trump Supporter: Get Over It." As a devout liberal, I was intrigued to understand the opinion of the other writer, so I clicked and gave it a read.

Surprisingly, the author and I managed to share a couple of opinions.

She states, "It's almost as if America is at war with itself because of who supports who and who is voting for who." I agree, as the political climate of the United States has been extremely messy since the 2016 Presidential Election.

She discusses the distasteful actions towards political advocacy for candidates of an opposing party of oneself. I agree. She continues by specifically mentioning vandalism of vehicles and Trump-themed picket signs (although liberals, moderates, and various third party members are not the only one's enacting political vandalism.)

That, however, is where the similar opinions cease.

Dearest author, you contradict yourself not once, but twice within the context of your own writing.

You claim to be all for exercising free speech when it benefits you, begging people to "get over" your support for Trump. Are you not stifling others' expression of free speech when asking them to get over it, by asking them to simply deal with it? Are you not stifling their rights by asking them to idly sit by, instead of being outspoken about the government they deem unjust? After all, the First Amendment was created to protect citizens from their government, not from "mean people" who hold differing opinions.

You state, "I understand that people will have differing thoughts on subjects and I respect that. You voted for Hillary? Good for you! Or Sanders? More power to ya!" This would be incredible, if it were genuine.

Prior to these statements, you insult the liberal party. You write, "The media will brainwash you and tell you different, and liberal America eats it up." Is this to imply that liberals are, perhaps, less educated, so much so that we allow ourselves to be "brainwashed?" That we are incapable of running our own fact checks and looking into political statements for ourselves?

You continue, "Many Liberals and Democrats will do their best to paint him as the most evil man to ever live, but that couldn't be further from the truth." This is a very hasty generalization, as fellow Republicans have also denounced Trump.

How can you encourage a state of "vote for whoever you want," while simultaneously attacking one side of the spectrum?

If this is your implication, you are sorely mistaken. There are plenty of reasons that keep persons around this country from simply "getting over" the election of your president.

Trump is ableist, racist, and misogynistic.

He mocked a reporter. While this incident seems to be up for debate regarding the intention of Trump's movements, I find it convenient that I have never seen Trump mimic these actions either before or after the reporting incident.

He insinuated that Hillary Clinton didn't have the "fortitude, strength, or stamina" (i.e. physical wellness) to lead the country. This is a direct attack against those with health conditions and therefore, potential disabilities, with the assumption that somebody other than a typical able-bodied, able-minded person is unfit and incapable.

His family business was sued by Nixon's Department of Justice for discrimination based on race. He was president of the company at that time. Doormen of the buildings had been told to "deflect African Americans who came to Trump buildings to apply for apartments."

He consistently degrades Mexican peoples, saying, "They are not our friend, believe me. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

He proposed a travel ban for persons of predominately Muslim countries, including refusal of reentry for Muslim-Americans.

He complained of getting bored when women become successful: "I think that putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing. Unfortunately, after they're a star, the fun is over for me. It's like a creation process. It's almost like creating a building. It's pretty sad."

And, of course, who can forget, "Grab them by the pussy."

What are Trump and his supporters really saying when they advocate "#MakeAmericaGreatAgain?"

Which era of American history are you referencing when you push for America to be great "again?"

Are you looking to go back to the 1800s when white Europeans used the idea of Manifest Destiny to justify the systematic erasure of Native Americans?

Was America better with the passing of the Page Act of 1875, discriminating specifically against Asian immigrants? Were we better off when Chinese women were denied entry to the United States based on bogus stereotypes, labeling each of them as prostitutes? Was it easier when border control could turn away hopeful immigrants simply because they were "undesirable?"

Was America "great" when over 4,000 men, women, and children (the majority of whom were black) were lynched during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow Eras?

Is America great again right now because the Department of Homeland Security is separating 7 year old children from their parents?

You claim you are afraid to openly support Trump, but that means nothing when there are thousands of people afraid to simply exist in his America.

From November 9 to December 12, 2016 (the month following the election), there were 1,094 "bias-related incidents" reported in the Southern Poverty Law Center's fourth update.

Anti-immigrant incidents: 315

Anti-black incidents: 221

Anti-Muslim incidents: 112

Anti-LGBTQ+ incidents: 109

Admittedly, the article does note that 13 incidents have been revealed to be false thus far, and the researchers behind the article have committed to continuing to weed out the fabricated stories.

But, what about anti-Trump incidents? Surely, they account for a portion of these reports.

Anti-Trump incidents account for 26 of the reports, a mere 2.7% of all reported.

Shortly after Trump's election, my 9-year-old sister asked me, "Abby, why are white people so mean?"

Do you know who you're standing behind when you advocate for Trump? Do you know what it means when you tweet "#MakeAmericaGreatAgain?" Do you know what it's like to fear for your safety, for your life, in a country boasting of freedom?

There is a difference between supporting the Republican Party and/or being politically conservative, and rallying behind somebody like Donald Trump to run the country.

Perhaps you are the one who needs to "grow up" and "get over it."

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

11 Signs You Grew Up In Hauppauge, NY

Because no one ever really leaves.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
