FSU Hacks Every Incoming Freshman Needs To Know

Your freshman year in college is an amazing experience that you'll remember your entire life, but it can also be nerve-racking. I remember laying awake at night thinking about FSU and not knowing what to expect. With my freshman year in the books, I have learned a lot about college and especially life at Florida State. Here are a few of my FSU hacks that every incoming freshman needs to know.

Strozier Is Not The Only Library.

During your first year at FSU, it is likely that you'll spend a lot of time scouring Strozier in order to find that perfect study spot. Before you go walk around in circles for a half an hour, try some of the other libraries. Dirac has a Starbucks and the line isn't nearly as long as Stroz. In case libraries aren't your thing, there are tons of other spots to study on campus. One of my favorite spots is The Sweet Shop, located on Jefferson Street, across from Landis Hall. I'd recommend trying the Chai Latte, and don't forget to leave your mark on the wall!

Find Your Perfect Meal Plan.

If you're living on campus, there's a good chance that your dorm requires you to purchase a meal plan. Do not go straight to the unlimited option! If you're anything like me, dining hall food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is going to get exhausting. Check out the other meal plan options FSU has to offer. I'd recommend adding the VIP package to any meal plan. The VIP package allows one swipe per day at most campus dining locations for up to $6. This includes Subway, 4 Rivers, Chick-fil-A, and more! It's an additional $99 on your meal plan, but trust me, it's worth it.

Use the Shuttles.

Whether or not you're extremely lazy like me, you're going to want to check out the FSU shuttles. FSU is a huge campus and the weather is not always enjoyable to walk in. Rain or shine, the shuttles will always be able to get you from point A to point B. There are various shuttle stops and routes throughout campus. Some routes even venture off to other parts of Tallahassee. For shuttle maps, download the app Rider. Rider will help you find the closest shuttle stop to your location as well as show you the routes of the various shuttles. Additionally, it tells you how many minutes away the shuttle is, so you know exactly when to arrive at the stop.

Take Advantage of Classes at The Leach.

The Leach is FSU's amazing gym that is open to all students, although it can be a bit overwhelming at times. In order to avoid crowds, check out some of the classes offered at there. All you have to do is register online 24 hours before the class. Some of their programs are Yoga, Kick-boxing, Pilates, and even Spin. With a range of classes designed for beginners, advanced, and everything in between, you will be sure to find your perfect workout.

Check Out On Campus Activities.

At FSU, there is truly something for everyone. If you're looking for something fun to do, look no further than right on campus. Check out the Askew Student Life Center, home to FSU's on-campus movie theater. Movies are shown 5-6 nights a week and tickets are free for students! If you're looking for something to do between classes, head over to Market Wednesday at the Union. Every Wednesday, stroll around the courtyard of the union and check out the various vendors and student organizations. And be sure to snag some free food! Additionally, make a trip over to The Rez! The FSU Reservation offers swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and relaxation for all. It's free with your student ID! Grab a bunch of your friends and make it a great day on the lake. Finally, don't forget to see a show at The FSU Flying High Circus. One of two collegiate circuses in the nation, the FSU circus is completely student-run and features jaw-dropping routines. Regardless of what you're interested in, there is activity for you at FSU.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.

Some universities only get two or three days off for Thanksgiving break. Or, if your university is like mine, you get the whole week off go go home. A whole week off is a long time. I'm not complaining, because I'd rather have a whole week off than three days, but there is a lot of down time. Here are some ideas as to what you can do to get the most out of your Thanksgiving break.
