I am a student at the great University of Georgia. Now that I am here, I couldn't imagine wearing anything but red and black and proclaiming "Glory, Glory" but that wasn't always the case.
I only applied to only two schools, UGA as my instate back-up, and my number one choice, The University of Missouri. I was so dead set on Mizzou that I planned for nothing else. I was enrolled, I planned my Summer orientation, and I found myself a roommate.
As to be expected, my potential cohabitant and I found each other online. She was brunette me and I was blonde her. The more we talked and chatted the more I, and my those around me, realized we were a match made in heaven. She and I liked the same clothing brands, we both had a passion for baseball (and each the only ones in our friend groups like this), and most importantly, we were both going to be out of state students. That in itself was going to be a great bonding experience.
This girl who lived 1400 miles away from me became such a big part of my friend group. My friends added her on snap chat, my family asked about her, and she and I talked every day. We planned what dorm to live in, sent each other links to decor websites, and even sent each other Odyssey articles about roommates and the relationship we were so excited to have with each other.
Four and a half months after I started talking to her, my family and I decided that Mizzou would not be the right fit for me and I had to break it to my sweet roommate that we would not be roommates after all. She took it gracefully, wished me all the best, and we hoped to get the chance to meet each other.
So a year after first meeting each other online, we have a 289-day Snapchat streak, we still talk on occasion (we kept each other very updated during our perspective recruitment weeks), and we even were in the same room during a gymnastics meet here in Athens. Though we have yet to officially meet, I consider her a good friend. I have gotten to know this other person through tiny squares and 10-second pictures. She may not share a shoebox with me, but she is my modern day collegiate pen pal and that's is still pretty cool.
