To be from the South means to enjoy a slower pace of life
Where we hold our community of friends and family close
And the importance of a good home-cooked meal is ingrained in every soul.
We may not have the shine and glitter of the big cities
Nor the excitement and sparkle of innovative and new things
But we do have a rich history engraved in our bones
A nostalgic past seeped into our roots and soil.
People might think the South is conservative
Too stubborn and rigid for the changing present
But the truth is, we are the ones who shaped it.
We are the ones who broke from the ugly past.
We are the ones who started the movement against injustice.
We, with our tears, sweat, blood and pain
Changed the future
So when people scoff at our backwardness and humbleness
Our tendency to take it easy and to stray from the limelight
They have no idea about the slumbering giant within.
This golden era of individuality and competition
Can only lead to loneliness
For one can only shine so long until one’s luster fades
And the light is shone on another
This is the prophecy the wheel of fortune has ordained
But fear not
Because the South holds solace and shelter for everyone
Especially those with lost, rejected and well-worn lives
In our homes
You will find a warm hearth that never dies
You will understand the depth of our love and hospitality
And you will learn why people come as guests and stay as family.
Amen
