From The Eyes Of A Makeup Artist

On Her Special Day

I began to paint on the primer to help minimize the pores and any fine lines. I ask the first Bridesmaid how she knew the bride, and she told me her story as I prepared her foundation. They had become sorority sisters at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and from then on were inseparable. The two enjoyed their college years together and watched each other grow from their freshmen year to now. We giggled and tried not to cry from laughing so hard while applying her eyeliner. Once the first Bridesmaid was finished with makeup, I sent her over to the hair dresser.

Next, was the 'Maid of Honor.' She sat down and I began to do my work. We attended high school with the bride. We talked about all the activities we did and our favorite high school memories. While finishing the last Bridesmaid, the Maid of Honor hushed everyone in the room and presented the bride with a gift, as it was from the groom. Attached was a letter that would leave me and the others with tears in our eyes. His love for her was so true and beautiful. When she finished his page and a half letter, the bride opened up a box. It was a beautiful diamond bracelet to wear when she walked down the aisle. Everyone gasped and gathered around to "ohh" and "ahh" at the dazzling jewelry. Once everyone got their look I had to break up the crowd and finally make over the bride.

Like the others, her face was clear and beautiful, just waiting to be painted to perfection. At this point we were short on time and I was moving as quick as I could. I reached into a separate bag filled with brushes only to be used for the bride. Each one was soft to the touch and left a beautiful finish. While I was applying her makeup one of my team members was finishing her hair and about the time she put in the last bobby pin, I put on her last stroke of lipstick. I was now finished and every girl in the room was glowing with smiles from ear to ear.

It was time to leave so everyone piled into their cars and left for the reception. When they arrived everyone changed into their dresses and began to prepare the bride. It was time, here she comes, the doors are open as she stands arm and arm with her father, the music begins to play. The groom looks over his shoulder butterflies fill his stomach. She looked so beautiful walking down the aisle. Like a luminous ray of light. Everyone's heart is filled with joy as she makes her way to the alter. I couldn’t believe that just moments ago, I was applying her last touch-up of blush on her cheeks. I’ve never loved doing anything more in my life. Knowing that I could make someone feel beautiful on the inside and on the outside is the most rewarding feeling in the world. This is a day I will cherish forever; the day I helped transform my friend a beautiful bride.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
