Struggles All College Freshmen Have

"College is fun," they said.

I was so excited about starting college, especially for a new beginning. It’s only been a month, and I’ve already met so many great people, joined an amazing sorority, and started a new job. I love the social aspect and the freedom of college, but the school part is where it gets not so fun.

I have always made good grades and been extremely involved with other clubs. So I thought I knew how to multitask and study. Key word in that sentence was THOUGHT. College is a legit slap in the face. Everything you thought you knew how to do isn’t good enough. Or, if you’re like me and haven’t been pushed enough academically to really understand your study skills, then it’s a very real struggle. There are a lot of changes that you’re trying to adapt to, and it can be extremely difficult at times. Here are 10 thoughts/struggles that pretty much every college freshman can relate to.

If you don’t feel like you’re constantly drowning, are you really in college?

1. You're sitting here killing yourself to make a good grade when this class has absolutely NOTHING to do with your major.

2. You’ve accepted that unless you have an 8 a.m., you will be parking at the Softballs fields and you will go to your first class sweaty and aggravated before your day has even started.

3. Your backpack weighs 30 pounds.

4. You go from feeling like you’re on top of the world to feeling like jumping off the 2-10 bridge in five seconds.

5. Going to bed at 3 a.m. is pretty much the norm.

6. You wonder why you even went to high school, because it prepared you for absolutely nothing.

7. Emotional breakdowns are a regular thing.

8. You’ve pretty much accepted that your life is a crap show 24/7.

9. You start college knowing exactly what you want to do with your life then flash forward to a month later and you have absolutely no idea.

10. You struggle to figure out your own routine and what works best for you.

On a more positive note, I do understand that things will get better and that your first semester is always hard trying to get used to everything. But I didn’t think it would be this hard. I personally don’t handle change very well, so I’m trying to be patient with myself through all of this. I am slowly but surely figuring out my new routine, and I am still trying to figure out my study habits, but I know they will come. I've failed a test that I studied really hard for, which I shed a few tears over, but that's okay. I'm gonna have up and downs, that's life and I'm learning to be okay with that.

If you are struggling too, know that you aren't alone.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
