When I was applying to colleges my senior year in high school, I ultimately came to the conclusion that I wanted to go to a medium-sized school. I did not want to be just a number in the classroom, nor did I want everyone to know my name.
I ended up getting accepted into Kennesaw State University in Georgia and felt that it was a perfect fit and only had about 15,000 students. My sophomore year of college, Kennesaw had bought over Southern Polytechnic State University, increasing the student enrollment to 32,500. My medium sized school had now become the second largest university in the state of Georgia.
I suddenly went from having about 50 students in my classes to roughly 200. I had become just a number and found it difficult to contact my teachers or even get help if I needed it.
Later that year, I found out I would be moving up north, so I began looking at colleges again since I had to transfer. I ultimately decided to go to the same school that my mom had attended, Widener University.
When I went on the tour of the school, I immediately asked how many students went there. The tour guide stated 6,630 without even flinching. I could not believe what she had said. I would now be attending a college only a little bigger than my high school.
Through the time I have attended Widener, I have received more opportunities than I ever would have if I had continued at a large school. I have been able to really get to know my teachers and classmates. Regardless of the fact that these schools were both so different, I am glad that I was able to experience both types of colleges.
