We all have a hometown, a place where we grew up and created some of the best memories of our lives. A lot of people will agree that your hometown helps shape who you are as an individual. Fortunate enough for me, I'm still living in my hometown of Geneseo, New York.
My hometown not only serves as a place for thousands of people to grow up and raise their children, but it also acts as a place where young minds come together to receive a higher education. That's right; I grew up in a college town.
I've never had any issue sharing my small town with SUNY Geneseo or their students because I believe that Geneseo is one of the greatest places to live. Small town life isn't for everybody, but living in Geneseo is more than small town life. Geneseo isn't just a town/village; Geneseo is a community that's stood through thick and thin to support all those who fall within it. Geneseo is kind, but it can also be harsh when you need it to be. Geneseo is loving. Geneseo is my home.
That being said, I can't help but share that I don't believe SUNY Geneseo student have this same regard for those who live in the town, as we may have for them.
This past weekend was move-in weekend, which means tensions were high, traffic was absolutely horrific, and you couldn't even step foot in Walmart or Wegmans without having an anxiety attack. Seriously.
I was walking around Walmart and I overheard some college students, who I'm assuming were freshmen by the doe-eyed look on their faces and their inability to talk discretely in public, talking about "townies."
Urban Dictionary defines townie as follows: "this is a term used by students who have gone to a new city for school to describe the natives of that town. It is often seen as derogatory by those who use it, but townies themselves often embrace it as a badge of honor".
Those girls were complaining about a "stupid townie" that wouldn't get out of their way. This stupid townie just so happened to be an older woman in a wheelchair.
Excuse me, what?! LOL.
I know with every batch of bright students come a few duds, and I'm sure those girls aren't super sh*tty human beings like they were acting but come on...
I don't think that there should be any reason why we can't share our town together. You come here for four years, and those four years change you. We've been here our entire lives. This town made us.
So from a "townie" to a college kid, please be respectful to our town and we'll be respectful of you.
