The rights of speech and expression have developed exponentially since Roman times. The press is now capable of making any statement as long as it can be supported with sufficient evidence. Along with this freedom of speech, people now have freedom of expression. A more common form of protest prevalent (although not ethical) in the United States currently is shooting people. In response to that, many people have started expressing their views against this.
Recently, a famous athlete, Colin Kaepernick refused to stand while the National Anthem was being sung during a football game. The entire media covered what Colin Kaepernick did and started falsely accusing him of disrespect towards the nation and the military. On the other hand, it was anything but. The media hasn't shed much light on why Kaepernick did what he did. According to David McDonald, "although highly controversial, Kaepernick has the full right to protest for what he believes in – he has not broken any laws, and he has not harmed anyone through his actions."
Kaepernick's motive was to bring the issue of violence and discrimination of the African-American race to the forefront of our minds. Although his motive was rational, his way of expressing his point of view was extremely arguable. Some people were in partial agreement with Kaepernick's comments. According to Cane, "I immediately applauded Kaepernick for using the art of protest to spark a national dialogue. People are dying. We are in the eye of a cultural crisis in America."
Although Kaepernick's ways were arguable, his motive was rational. Based on the condition of this country, someone needs to speak up and Colin Kaepernick has done just that.
