From East To West: My Trip To California

First time and hopefully not the last time being on the west coast!

From East To West: My Trip To California

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to travel with my family over the holidays to a place that I had never been before. California, in my mind, was a foreign state where everything was completely different than what I considered “normal," and for the most part I was right about that. We had the most amazing time on our trip and it will definitely be a place I won’t forget.

The purpose of our trip to LA was to go to the Rose Bowl to watch the Georgia Bulldogs play against Oklahoma. That game was a wild ride in and of itself with the Dawgs narrowly gaining us a victory and a trip to the National Championship. Thankfully, with that win we had a great time throughout the entire trip.

I honestly wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do or see there, mainly because I didn’t know what exactly there was to do except for the Hollywood tourist things. But thankfully we had my cousins who lived there and they were able to show us around and take us to some truly incredible places.

The first place we went to that was absolutely beautiful was to the Griffith Observatory that overlooked all of Los Angeles and you could see the Hollywood sign. Even though there was a decent amount of fog and marine layer in the air, we could still see for miles and it was increadibly beautiful. We took quite a number of photos there for sure.

After that we took a surprise turn and went to the La Brea Tar Pits. I was really excited when I found out we were going here because I had learned about them recently in Geology class and just the massive size of the (still active!) tar pits was incredible. The museum was fascinating and the tar pits were a crazy site.

From there, we saw Huntington Beach, the Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, and the Pacific Coast Highway. Each place we went to was absolutely gorgeous and the sights were breathtaking. The food was always great wherever we went and the hospitality was wonderful too.

I’m not sure if or when I’ll go back to California, but it sure was an amazing trip for myself and my family and I am so thankful that we had the opportunity to travel there, be with family, and watch the Bulldogs beat Oklahoma in double overtime at the very historic Rose Bowl.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
