An Open Letter To 2016: Stop Being So Selfish

I'm sick of reading the news to learn that we have lost another iconic legend.

Dear 2016,

I am writing you to inform you that your time is almost up.

Five days until the New Year and you just keep taking people without looking back. People that have made a mark on this world, people who were legends, and brought us humor and entertainment.

As I reflect on you 2016, here is a list of all the greats you have taken this year, just in case you need a reminder:

1. Actor/Comedian Ricky Harris-just 54 years old.

2. Singer/Legend George Michael-53 years old.

3. Singer Prince-57 years old

4. Actor Gene Wilder-83 years old (He lived a nice long life, compared to the previous 3)

5. Singer David Bowie-69 years old

6. Actor Alan Rickman-69 years old

7. Glenn Frey from the Eagles-67 years old

8. Writer of "To Kill a Mockingbird" Harper Lee-89 years old

9. Country Great Merle Haggard-79 years old

10. Boxing Legend Muhammed Ali-74 years old

11. Golfing Legend Arnold Palmer-87 years old

12. Singer/Songwriter Leonard Cohen-82 years old

13. Actress Florence Henderson: Known for her role as the mom on the Brady Bunch-82 years old

14. Astronaut John Glenn-95 years old

15. Carrie Fisher: Known for Princess Lea in the Star Wars Franchise (Debbie Reynolds was her Mother, aka Grandma Cromwell from the Halloweentown movies)-60 years old

Now, I understand that there is a circle of life, and that we all will die some day, but this isn't even the complete list. I have never seen a year where so many greats are taken. Now, Betty White is 94 years old. Don't take Betty White just yet. Not in 2016. In fact, do the world a favor and just make her immortal because everybody loves Betty White.

I also understand that some of these people may have been battling their own issues with drugs and/or alcohol. That doesn't mean they need to die. Yes, it is a consequence but at least given them at least one more year to get themselves together. Whatever happened to second chances?

To the legends that have passed: May you rest in peace. Some of you died young, others have lived your life to the fullest.

As for you 2016, I can't wait to never see you again.

Sincerely,

The Girl who is Upset Over Losing All the Great Legends

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
