No concert is the same. You have dive bars, house shows, clubs, outdoor shows, concert halls, old theaters, stadiums, amphitheaters, arenas, and pretty much any space that can hold a concert. Music always finds its way into a space. Working with productions as a SUNY Music Major and spending half my life attending concerts I've had the pleasure of seeing live music in every space imaginable. But how does one decide a favorite?
Every space imaginable has its perks. Amphitheaters most often provide a space to party. Nothing better describes Saratoga Performing Arts Center (where are my New Yorkers?) than the smell of weed, beer, and sweat. A club provides an intimate setting whilst allowing a sizable crowd to form. A club has energy. You have your type that's comfortable in a dive bar. You may know everyone there, and you might even get to see a band you like with 5 other people (I've played for 3 before, it happens).
A stadium has its perks. Not everyone likes the floor and the energy of general admission. A stadium provides seats, overpriced concessions, and the ability to relax while going crazy for live music in the comfort of your seat. But how are you going to crowd surf from your seat (I've been there, nothing hurts more than falling on a chair)? Or how about an old theater with its detailed art, red cushioned seating, stale popcorn on the floor, and high ceilings?
And lastly, the house show. Being my favorite, the thing that house shows brought me was connection. Being in a small, last-minute, loud space did something for me. It connected me to that experience, that music, and that day.
That being said, everyone connects to the concert experience a different way. Whether you're 5 feet from the stage or 500 feet from the stage, the thing that brings you back to live music is the connection.
What is your favorite setting to see a concert?
