Seeing Frogleg for the first time last weekend at Malarkey's Pub, a small Wausau bar, was a hoot. As a young band cultivating roots — ranging from reggae, American rock, jazz, bluegrass and funk — they bring an energy that bobs and weaves a tapestry of melodic intensity. Consisting of two guitars, bass, sax, keyboards, drums, and percussion the ensemble captivated a crowd ranging from young hippies and country bros, to full wedding parties and retired soccer moms. Me, I guess I fit somewhere in between. As a group that meanders from intensely driven guitar solos, to soft touches of jazz breaks, they show no fear of hitting on soul and bluegrass sediments. The vocals of lead singer, Joe Dunn, never fail to bring the crowd full circle within a sublime journey of reconnection. If you’re in the Twin Cities you can catch them every Thursday at The Bunker in Minneapolis for “Frogleg Thursdays”. This week, they will be playing their weekly gig with their friends from The May North. You can check out their music and score some free downloads at their Facebook page.
