A home is a space to gather with loved ones; to reflect on the long, hard days and celebrate good news in great company. This space, in addition to being filled with people, is a place that also holds many possessions. By glancing into every room of the home, many different objects can be seen.
A television is mounted on the wall next to decorative vases and candle holders. To the left, a computer is resting on a large desk next to various knick-knacks and technological gadgets. The kitchen cabinets hold endless amounts of silverware, distinguished dining pieces, and a glasses with rims and stem for every occasion. Upstairs in bedrooms, closets are filled with countless articles of clothing, each piece perfectly tailored for every type of weather or special event.
Every living person on this planet has a set of values that they place an important emphasis on in their life. These values vary in each individual, but the diversity shows a great amount of individuality and character. After all, these differences are what distinguish us, and make us unique.
But how are these values manifested? Are they in our possessions? Or are they expressed through the experiences that we share with the people in our lives that we hold dear?
Sometimes, it is wise to take quiet moments in the day to reflect on our lives and the spaces around us; to ask questions to ourselves about where our values are placed. Do I place more importance on the physical objects in my life, rather than on emotional experiences?
This question is a great way to begin a session of reflection. Think back to the most special times in life that were experienced between loved ones and yourself. Was there celebration of the newest clothing trends or technology? Or was it instead of laughing together in the family room after someone danced around in their pajamas?
It is very important that we take it upon ourselves to start valuing our life experiences, as opposed to worshiping the items that we have that, at the end of it all, have no value. They merely serve to take up space in our lives.
Perhaps the most important objects that a home holds are those inside of it, who live to share experiences with each other that are filled with love, laughter, and joy. These are the experiences that leave marks on the world, and where our presence on this planet is recognized. Spend these moments with those who love unconditionally, rather than with objects that will not love you back.
