Friends: Your Chosen Family

Getting to choose who gets stuck with you.

Friends: Your Chosen Family
Sara Bayles

No matter what, your family has to put up with you (and I mean that in a good way.) Your family shows unconditional love and support without question since the day you were born. No questions ever asked, they just have to because they are your family and they are always going to love you. But your friends are different. You aren't born know who is going to be a text away and who will be a part of your life who will also show you unconditional love and support. Your friends are the family you chose for yourself.

You learn who you like and who don't, and who you want to spend more time with than others. You pick who you want to share memories with, who you want to help you with your homework or drama or just through life in general. Who will sit in your dorm for hours doing nothing but spend time with each other? Who will go on hour long drives just because you can? Who will accept you at your worst and best? You love them like you would love family and they do the same for you. Sure, some of your chosen family comes and goes over the years as you grow up and go your separate ways, but that can happen with your family as well.

Chosen family isn't as permanent, but it sure does feel like it could be at times. Nothing is ever certain. You have certain people for certain points in your life but there are some that you know will be around and be a part of your family forever, and they are there because you chose them to be. You were so drawn to them as a person and their personality that you wanted to spend your time with them. You wanted them to be apart of your life.

Those that you know will be your chosen family forever is one of the best feelings you will ever have. They are there when families not (or if you don't want family to be there.) They are there when you cry and are there to make you laugh until you cry. The concept of choosing who is apart of your life and who gets to be with you when you need it is something that is so unique and so special. You get to share your life and moments of your life with people who want to do the same with you. Some you have known longer and some you may have just met but it's one of those things that you just know when it happens that you have met your chosen family.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
