Friends -- the '90s sitcom that captured our hearts through the intertwined and hilarious experiences of Ross,
Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey. Through 10 seasons of laughter,
Friends enabled us to meet, greet, and become familiar with each main
character's personality traits, flaws, and their personal contribution to the
concept of friendship. Through an in-depth analysis (binge watching on Nick at
Night) of the show’s six characters, I have formally decided that Ross, Rachel,
Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey each exhibit a type of friend that everyone has had at some point and, in my opinion, needs in their life. Overall,
the era of the '90s deserves a standing ovation for introducing into our hearts and
minds an incredibly accurate and hysterical portrayal of true friendship.
Ross, the nerd. Formally known as the geeky Doctor of Paleontology, Ross is constantly
the butt of all jokes through his infatuation with dinosaurs and multiple
failed marriages. Nevertheless, Ross is more importantly known as the sweet,
charming fellow who, despite his scientific dorky-ness, will always be the
perfect person to volunteer as your prom date or lend you a shoulder to cry on.
Rachel, ditzy fashionista. Through, initially, making her Friends debut in a couture wedding gown, from the start, Rachel was
labeled as a spoiled rich girl. Nevertheless, her huge heart, lack of common
sense, and desire to make it in the real world allowed her friends to
disregard her inability to take out the trash without crying. While you can’t
help face-palming when she comes up with words such as, “transponder,” Rachel’s
shopping skills, fashion expertise, and abundant compassion make her one of your best friends.
Monica, tough lover. She’s bossy,
demanding, and a certified control freak, but her overly competitive
nature and obsession with cleaning captures your heart. Despite her demanding
Type A personality and overbearing OCDness, she is a woman with a plan, allowing
you to go to her for advice when you need it most. While you may not always
like it, Monica is not afraid to tell you the ugly truth you are attempting to
avoid -- “Yes, you look fat in that dress,” and “No, he is not going to call you
back.” In the end, you will always be
thankful for her tough love.
Chandler, awkward goofball. Everyone's friend group has someone who is constantly referred
to by outsiders as, “Oh, he’s that
guy.” More specifically, that guy who always says the wrong thing and makes situations more awkward than necessary.
And, yet, you love him anyway. While he is rarely taken seriously, and has a
tough time with the ladies, Chandler’s genuine nature and ability to always put a smile on your face, makes him one of those happy-go-lucky people that
you can’t help but love being around.
Phoebe, whimsical flower child. With her head always somewhere in the clouds,
Phoebe's open minded and quirky personality allows you see new perspectives and
serves as a constant reminder to appreciate the little things life has to offer, including her multiple musical renditions of, “Smelly Cat.” Despite her tragic
upbringing, Phoebe never fails to see the good in others -- and always assists
you in doing the same.
Joey, ladies' man. He’s good looking, alluring, and seductive. Let's be real, it has definitely crossed your mind once or twice. Regardless, Joey
will always hold a special friend-zoned place in your heart with his
infinite one-night stands and cheesy pick-up lines that he has tried on you, unsuccessfully, multiple times. While he may not necessarily be the sharpest tool
in the shed, he can unhook a bra in a matter of milliseconds -- a feat you
cannot help but be impressed by.
