To My Friend That Introduced Me To My Beloved WashCaps

You know who you are.

First and foremost, thank you. Also, I hate you. My obsession with the Washington Capitals is growing and it’s fueled by your parallel obsession with them too.

In high school, I sort of paid attention to hockey. I watched an occasional Red Wings game and we went to our team’s high school games and cheered them on and I understood it all and it was all fun and entertaining. But I stuck to my guns about being primarily a basketball family and fan.

This year, you started sending me pictures of André Burakovsky and the roomies Michael Latta and Tom Wilson. I had no idea what or who you were talking about half the time, but I went along with it. Until I had to hop on board because I was getting sick of being out of the loop with you and your Caps.

Up North, you had the waiter turn on the Caps game for us to watch. It was entertaining, and I liked the fast pace of the game. Between periods, you told me about the players, and their numbers and nicknames, which led to you quizzing me on them. Thank you: I now have all the boys’ names memorized along with their number, position, previous NHL stats, nationality, and who rooms with who (Two Canadians and a Swede #CapsRoomiesForever).

Since that weekend of Caps Quizzes, I have become possessed by everything Caps. I watch their Snapchat story daily. I follow the players on social media. I record and watch, or listen to every game. I watch NHL updates and interviews on them. The sound of sticks and skates on the ice is now comforting to me.

The best (and kind of worst) part about it, is that I get to share my crazy love for the team with you. We feed off each other’s obsession and I love it. Basically, all we talk about every day is Caps. Also Swedes. We love Swedes (Herregud, vi har fortfarande att göra semla!).

Also, thank you so much for the pucks. They're my lucky game pucks and I will cherish them forever.

The other day you said to me, “I need a hobby,” to which I replied, “Well, Caps were our hobby, but now it’s an obsession.” It’s beyond true. I’m basically a Washington Capitals stalker with a slightly stronger interest in Burkie, Tom Wilson (especially) and Michael Latta and the relationship they have. Papa (Nick Backstrom), Batya (Brooks Orpik), Braden (and Brandi) Holtby, Puppy (Jay Beagle) are equally important. Also, let’s never ever forget Alex Ovechkin wearing sweatpants over jeans and then receiving DC Modern Luxury Magazine’s cover photo and named one of the magazine’s Men of Style.

Anyone that wants to call us clueless girls and/or bandwagon fans can hop on their own wagon and excuse themselves from our interests.
Also, you and I both are still Red Wings fans in case anyone was wondering.

Thanks for being the reason behind my Caps obsession and helping keep it alive. Love you lots. #RockTheRed

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
