To The Friend I Have To Leave Behind

While I'm moving to college, I am forced to leave my best friend, but we will still be strong.

Hey, it's me, the friend you took in when I was struggling to find some.

Without you, I would've had such a rough year to go through all alone.

Without you, I would've been lost. I would've had no one to go to when I needed advice or help with homework.

Without you, I wouldn't have any memories to share with new friends or even my kids in the future.

I appreciate all you've done for me in such a short amount of time.

Now I am moving on to college. I'm moving a few hours away, but we will not let distance destroy us. We will cherish the inside jokes we have, we will go on late night drives and go to get cookies at 2 a.m. when I come home to visit. We will plan trips for next summer and start to save up now. We will FaceTime and call each other daily.

We will keep our Snapchat streak strong, sending the ugliest of Snapchats to each other. I’ll visit home, and I hope you will come to visit me. I will be here to give you advice about your senior year, helping you the way that you helped me.

I will be here to help you find out what major is right for you at college. I will be here to help you apply for colleges, and give you advice for your entrance letters. I will be here to guide you so you succeed in whatever you want to do with your life.

I will be here if you don’t get into your dream college, we will sit and eat anything and everything until you feel better. I will be here if you do get into your dream college, going to visit as soon as possible to see your new home. I will be here for you though thick and thin, just like you were for me.

I want you to know that I will never have another friend like you, ever again. You are such a special person, to me and to the world. No one can compare to you.

You are kind to everyone, always trying to put your best foot forward. I want you to know how much you mean to me, whenever I need you, you are there. You are willing to listen to me complain about the same things over and over again. You are willing to be my best friend and not judge me, which is something I never had before. I wish I could take you to college with me, like a very long vacation, but I know I can’t.

I hope you work your hardest while I'm gone, I hope you have the best of days, even when they are gray. I hope you don't forget about me, because there's no way I’ll forget about you. Although I may be hours away, I am only one phone call away, don't be a stranger either, my dorm is always open.

Love, your best friend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
