Welcome to college. It’s terrifying.
Today, the rest of your life begins. So unpack and get settled into your new little box that will become your home. I know you’re overwhelmed, nervous, and maybe even a little (or a lot) sad. It’s OK; it’s normal. But this next chapter of your life is going to be amazing, so get ready.
Hopefully by now, you have met your roommate, and you’re starting to get a feel for the people on your floor. Looking around you are probably thinking to yourself “these are the weirdest people I have ever met” and you’re probably right. But these weird people will become your angels, your knights in shining armor, your home away from home, and your family. They will become your people. Embrace their weirdness, because come next summer you’re going to miss it.
This year is all about firsts. First time away from home, first time eating ramen every night for a week, and first time really truly getting to learn about yourself. I hope that you don’t shy away from these firsts, I hope you charge at them head on, full speed ahead. You will fail, probably a lot. And that’s okay. It’s all part of this crazy, beautiful, intense experience. But when you do fail, I’m here to help. I already love you all (whether you like me or not). Never underestimate how much I care.
Join everything. You never know what you are going to like until you try it. This campus has something for everyone. So find your place. College isn’t all about school work. You need to create those memories and relationships that will last a lifetime. Not only could you find your future spouse here, but also your bridesmaids and groomsmen. Keep that in mind.
Find your passions. I once read, “Your passions are not accidental; they are your calling." I don’t know if I have ever read a more true statement. At this point in your life, anything is possible. So invest in yourself and find the things that make the hair on your arms stand up and the things that keep you up all night because you are too excited to sleep. Find a major that motivates you for the rest of your life. Have goals and aggressively chase them. Let nothing stop you.
My job as your RA is to guide you, support you, and care for you. Do not be afraid to ask me for help. That is really my only purpose. And I want to help you. I want nothing more than to see you succeed. My hope for you is that when you check out of your room at the end of the year you will be a little sad. I hope that part of you will be able to call this school your home. I hope that you come to love your floor mates, and that you create lifelong relationships with them. I can’t wait to watch you grow and become your own person as you embark on this crazy journey over the next nine months.
Welcome to college. You’re going to love it.
