Freshmen, Don't Be Afraid To New Make Friends

Upcoming Freshman,

I know some of you will be starting college in less than two months from now and I can only imagine how some of you are afraid to start a new school with new people and not your normal group of friends. I get it you will be two to seven hours away from your friends since childhood, but that doesn't mean you can't make new friends!

There's this old saying that the friends you make in college will be your forever friends. Personally, I think its true, but don't be scared to reach out there and meet new people. You can also introduce them to your friends from high school if it gets to that point. Go ahead and go through recruitment, join the band or join another group in college. You may never know you will probably find that one guy or girl who will always be your side no matter what goes on in your college life.

I know I have, but its more of a group of people and they've made my college experience worthwhile. Don't stay in your dorm all day get out and reach out! Find your other half, home skillet, partner in crime, twin, your big dawg, your best friend. Once you do, it'll make freshmen year and the years after that the best days ever.

If you need help on how to start the making friends operation here's how you do it. Nine times out of 10 everyone is afraid to start over. Making friends in preschool was so easy.

Step 1.

Actually leave your dorm room! I mean yes, your roommate might become your best friend, but you still need to reach out some more.

Step 2.

Talk to people! I know our parents taught us to never talk to strangers but start like "What's your major?" or "Do you like this class" Mostly likely how you feel about the class someone else feels the same way and they might even have the same major. You'll see once the conversation picks up.

Step 3.

Grab Lunch! What's a great way to make friends better than getting grub together! Seriously, ask Dylan Burch!

Step 4.

Exchange Numbers if you havent already!

Step 5.

Study together! Escape to the library and study because I bet 99 percent of the time you will not be studying but telling stories back and forth about your life!

Step 6.

Hangout. Invite them over to watch a movie or go to the movies. You can probably even go out and explore the town just to get off campus for awhile

Here's the thing, do we really need steps on how to make friends because sometimes it just happens. I say the best friendships are the once you can't remember how you met it just like happened!

All in all you can do it! I believe in you.

Have a great freshman year!

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
