College Times

It is officially your second semester as a college freshman. You finally found a rhythm that works for you and, for the most part, you know where your classes are. Now, you are probably wondering whether or not the college you are attending is the right fit for you, thus you might want to transfer and start again in a new place. Or, you are thinking of joining the Greek life or maybe you are just deciding to go with the flow and allow things to just fall into place.

As a senior who is enduring her last year and is beginning to have a bittersweet taste in her mouth, I should let you know a few things: Your college experience flies. Sure it feels like a long way until senior year, but it senior year really hits you hard. It's like a train just running towards you high speed.

Freshman year is the year to reinvent yourself. To be the person you always wanted to be, to be the person you did not think you can be in high school. Get involved in classes, join the Greeks if that is what you want to do, make new friends, do things that make you feel uncomfortable and takes you out of your comfort zone.

Being a college freshman is fun and exciting, and if you are thinking of transferring schools because you are on a dry campus, you are leaving for the wrong reasons. The parties are exhilarating and hanging out with your friends are just as great, but if that is all you are there for, you are missing out.

I say this because you will see people leave because they feel they are "missing out on the college experience." When in fact, you make your college experience. You can decide what makes your college experience worth while.

It is ok if you have been going with the flow, but vow to yourself to do something different this next semester. Maybe join student government or the student entertainment board. Go to school events; there are more things to do on campus than just party.

There are so many activities to do on campus, and fun fact, some of the events give out FREE FOOD. If that does not get you to go then I do not know what will.

Do the things that you said you would do in high school but did not. Study abroad for a semester. I cannot stress enough about doing something different.

Getting involved on campus goes a long way because you realize your strengths and weaknesses, making you grow from the experience. College is the biggest adventure you will go on before you go off into the real world.

So go out and be the best you that you can possibly be. Before you know it, you will be in you senior year thinking, "Wow, I have done almost everything I wanted to do."

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
