Freshman Year

(As Told By New Girl)

Freshman Year

Freshman year is full of ups and downs, from making new friends to studying for finals. As my first year of college comes to a close, I realized how relevant New Girl was for relatable freshman moments.

1. When you realize you'll be living away from home

No parents, no rules! You're finally all on your own, everything is new and exciting, and you're going to make new friends! This year is going to be awesome!

2. The rest of August/September

You really miss your parents and their rules. Everything is changing, you can't find anything, and you miss your friends. This year is going to suck.

3. Being independent

Doing everything without any help pretty much went like this for the first few months.

4. Trying the college food for the first time

The first time you tasted this stuff you couldn't believe they could legally pass it off as food. Soon enough, though, you get used to it and couldn't wait until Thursday when the dining hall had your favorite pizza.

5. Making new friends

Oh, you're an accounting major? We should totally be friends so you can help me with my math homework.

6. Getting ready for your first big college test

It's gonna be so easy. You're gonna do great, dawg.

7. Flunking your first big college test

Studying the way you did in high school (aka looking over your notes once before going to bed and again the next morning before taking the test) doesn't work in college. Good thing you realized this early on and were able to improve your study techniques.

8. Going out for the first time

You knew you looked hot. You were beyond excited to turn up with your friends. Too bad when you got to the party, you literally had no room to move and it was not nearly as great as you had imagined.

9. Seeing the girl from English getting down at a party

Wasn't expecting that.

10. Loud neighbors

Don't they realize that the walls are literally paper thin and you know everything about that puppy Aunt Sally bought last month?

11. Any time you're forced to be an adult

Scheduling your own appointments, doing all the laundry and cleaning, making (or ordering) your own food--what a life.

12. When that one professor finally gives you a good grade

You know what I'm talking about. They've been giving you something lower than what you expected to get all semester and finally give you the grade you actually deserve. Or you finally got it together in that class and actually did well on an assignment for once. Either way...

13. Thinking you have your crap together

Getting great grades, having a blossoming social life, realizing you never gained "the freshman fifteen"...anything is possible--you can't wait to take on the world!

14. Then realizing you don't

Flunking a test or two, getting in a fight with your friends, eating some bad pizza, realizing you have to do this for at least three more years.

15. But through it all, at least freshman year taught you some stuff

Even if it wasn't all that much...

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
