Freshman Year Of College Expectations Vs. Reality

College is such a fun and exciting time of our lives. It's called the best years of your life for a reason. But, there are some things about college that no one warns you about. Let’s just say that not everything goes as expected.

1. Expectation: You and your roommates will be BFFLS!!!

Reality:

Although this can happen and definitely is a possibility, you and your roommate could also become sworn enemies. Living in such close proximity with someone is hard, so you can’t always expect things to go right.

2. Expectation: You’ll be super motived all of the time to get good grades.

We all expect to get super good grades in college and always be motivated.

Reality:

3. Expectation: The classes are going to be 50 times harder.

In high school, all the teachers try to prepare you for “the extremeness” of college courses like somehow college courses are like stepping into the depths of hell.

Reality:

But in reality, it’s just another year of school. Some classes are hard, some classes aren’t. It’s not something you should be afraid of.

4. Expectation: Living away from home is a piece of cake.

Everyone and their mother cannot wait to move out after high school and be on their own.

Reality:

No one warns you how hard adulthood is. Not seeing your family for months is a lot harder than you think it’ll be. And believe or not, you are going to miss your parents, a lot.

5. Expectation: Meal plan will be AWESOME!!

You expect to get gourmet dinners and endless amounts of food on meal plan.

Reality:

Not! Campus food sounds so great before you actually have to eat it every day. And meal plan is all fun and games until you run out.

6. Expectation: You’ll meet the love of your life in one of your classes.

We all dream of meeting “the one” by accidentally sitting next to them in math class or something.

Reality:

You never actually get the courage to speak to them.

7. Expectation: Every party is going to be awesome.

Reality:

There are definitely nights that turn out to be lame.

8. Expectation: You’ll be doing something fun every single night.

Reality:

You find yourself having a lot of Netflix and chill nights or studying til 3 in the morning; also you’re broke most of the time so….

9. Expectation: New school, new you!

Reality:

You’re still the same person, a couple of months isn't going to change who you are. Embrace it!

10. Expectation: You won’t miss a single one of your classes.

Reality:

Sometimes there are gonna be days where you don’t want to get out of bed, and that is okay.

11. Expectation: 8 am classes are a good idea.

You woke up every day at 6 am for school for the past 12 years of your life, why can’t you do it in college?

Reality:

Once you're in college, waking up earlier than 10 am seems almost impossible.

12. Expectation: You are going to decorate your dorm so cute and it’ll be just so cute!

You imagine you dorm to look like something out of a magazine.

Reality:

You live in a shoe box and there isn’t enough room to put that cute lamp or decorative rug.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
