10 Must-Have Items To Add To Your Freshman Year Dorm List

Today I had one of my friends ask me what things she should bring to her residence hall her first year of college. It is that time of year again where families are trying to get Christmas gifts for their family/friends who are high school seniors. I have put together a list of some of the things to either get them for Christmas, or to remember to bring when you’re off to college.

1. Black Out Curtains

These things are life savers. When you are trying to sleep in, or you just want to make your room really dark for a quick cat nap during the day!

2. A Keurig

They have cute little mini Keurig for sale now that would be perfect in a college room! For those of you who love coffee that is.

3. Plates/Spoons/Utensils

This is what I forgot my Freshman year. It is kind of hard to eat in your room if you don’t have any of these things to eat with!

4. Lamp

Whether this is a floor lamp or a bedside table lamp, this comes in handy when your roommate is trying to sleep but you need to get some reading done for class!

5. Fan

If you’re like me, you like the room FREEZING cold when you’re trying to sleep. Having a fan in your room can also help with the sound, if you like to hear noise when you’re sleeping.

6. Mini Trash Can

I cannot tell you how many times I went to throw something away, and there was not a trash can. A good life hack to use for trash bags…save your Walmart bags and use them as the trash bags! Saves you a lot of money and keeps your trash can from getting dirty!

7. Tape/Stapler/Pens/Pencils

You would think that this is a no brainier. However, I forgot a few of these things. It is also easier to keep these things organized if you have something to put them in, like a cute little organizer.

8. Laundry Basket

You’re going to have to bring something to carry your laundry to the laundry room with. I would suggest something tall and thin vs. something short and wide. It is a lot easier to carry things around!

9. Tylenol

You’re going to get a lot of headaches during the school year, so you need to make sure you have some medicine to make them go away!

10. Fleece Blanket

Sometimes you just want to cuddle up with a blanket and watch a movie! It is a lot easier to do that with a fleece blanket rather than your comforter. A fleece blanket is a much. Maybe you could get a quilt made out of your old high school t-shirts!

Hopefully this will help with Christmas lists or packing for college!!!

Happy Holidays!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
