Part of me thought that freshman year was going to be a cakewalk and that was the first mistake I made. The level of academics in college versus back in high school was almost entirely different, partially because I didn't do so well in high school, but that's behind us now. It was really fun, but a lot of work.
I had some great experiences and met some great people who've made an impact on my life and also kept connections with friends back home and my time away seemed to strengthen our friendships. Also, lost contact with a lot of people as well, which sucks part that's an unfortunate part of life that even though you may have had friendships in the past you will have to part ways with some people at some point.
One big thing: SPORTS. College sports are awesome! Specifically, if you're in the student section you'll never have a bad time. The first sporting I went to at ASU was a women's soccer game and I had a blast, honestly, it was so much fun. Plus, the "Games of the Week" that the 942 Crew posts on their Twitter page are always fun and a great way to get the student support for sports other than football and basketball that already have a big student turnout.
A big thing I learned is that I can have fun doing things on my own, there were a lot of events that I went to alone, without any of my friends and still had a great time. It was all about allowing myself to have fun rather than dwelling on not wanting to go alone, in the end, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If I want to go do something I'll go do it and not care if no one else wants to, which in turn made me more self-reliant and self-confident.
It wasn't always fun. I dealt with a lot of anxiety and some depression, and it was really hard sometimes even just to get out of bed and do everyday things, but the counseling services were always there to help and get me back on track.
I even did something I'd never thought I'd do... rush a fraternity! I joined a co-ed fraternity (yes those exist) and it was a lot of work, but it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Going to college was definitely a dose of reality since I was on my own for the first time and trying to find my way but in the long run, I cherish all the memories I've made and I know that next year will be even better.
