Freshman Year: Advice And My Experience

Freshman Year: Advice And My Experience
University of Mount Olive

Since the last semester of my freshman year of college just ended, here are reasons why my freshman year went smoothly, and advice to next year's incoming freshman.

Why my freshman year went well:

1. My roommate

Now, a lot of people are scared going into college because of the roommate situation in the dorms, and I've got to say I loved my roommate, and we became the greatest of friends. We did absolutely everything together this entire school year. I don't think I heard about a unpleasant issue with any two other roommates this entire year, either you get along extremely well or just don't pay attention to each other, which, in my opinion, is super weird considering you're living with the person. So shout out to my roommate, with whom I will be rooming again next year — I sure did get lucky!

2. Dining

Ok, so a lot of people complain about the dining halls, saying they serve the same food, but you know what, I loved dining. I could eat all I wanted and almost whenever I wanted, it was super convenient, and I actually didn't mind the food at all. In fact, a few upperclassmen that I met always asked for my guest passes because they missed the "dorm food."

3. Going out

The first night I went out this school year, I was really nervous to meet people. I'm actually an outgoing person, but I just wanted to be able to meet a lot of people my first night, and I did meet a few people who I saw regularly all school year. My first night out was actually really fun, and everyone was really welcoming once I told them I was a freshman... nobody cares about your class year in college, seniors are just as friendly to freshmen, so don't worry!

Advice to incoming freshman:

1. Staying healthy

OK, so let's just say I moved out feeling like a lazy whale. I never worked out because I slept so much! It's actually so sad, and I regret it because I feel so out of shape for summer now. You're going to snack out all night and drink beer, but just try to eat healthy at times and work out! Don't let the freshman 30 get to you — it's evil!

2. Going home

I know it's going to be hard the first few weeks being away from your friends and family back home, but I strongly suggest you do not go home often. I know it sounds horrible, but what I mean is, is that you should avoid going home every single weekend. I never understood why kids did this, unless there was a serious reason why of course, but if you're going home just because, well just don't. Wait a few months before going home again or wait until the next break. If you go home the first weekend of school then you'll never get used to it. Take some time meeting people, going out and experiencing college

Finally, good luck! You got this!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
