As all college students can agree, your priorities change from freshman year to junior year. That being said, as my third year rolls to an end, I would like to channel some great lovers of the college life -- Asher Roth and Sammy Adams -- to explain the difference between being a campus newbie and a seasoned almost-graduate.
Your thoughts on graduation.
“I wanna go to college for the rest of my life." -Asher Roth
Freshman year, I would have said absolutely -- no questions asked. I will never graduate. However, as a junior, I have found that classes have became more interesting, but small assignments worth hardly any points have become increasingly tedious. In the long run, every little bit counts; but come on, once you are out of core classes, the last thing you want to do is color a map for ten points towards your final grade.
Also, the party phase has come and, well, somewhat gone. There are days when all I want to do is hit up happy hour and second happy hour and whatever may come after that. One of my favorite things to say to my friends is, “I'm just going to see where the night takes me." But, recently, there are more days when I just want to chill with my roommates and relax. It's weird looking back at my first semester in college -- I had never had so much fun in my life -- but, now, I have found other things I like to spend my time doing, that don't end with a hangover.
When you think of the word "drama."
“I can't see the haters no more; I feel great." -Sammy Adams
Self actualization is a real thing and it comes with age, time and practice. Once you know who you are, and what matters to you, no picture of you passed out from freshman year posted on Sneek will get you down like it would have, back in the day. One thing you learn to accept is that the only person that really cares about you is your close friends and ultimately yourself. So forget what ever loser posted some bullying picture of you; he probably just needs to get laid.
Needing a relationship.
“Single doesn't mean I'm looking for somebody." -Sammy Adams
Most freshmen come into their first year of university newly estranged from their high school sweetheart, ready to meet as many coeds as possible. Nearly everyone I knew freshman year was single and it was great; no obligations other than getting to class and doing laundry. Now, as a junior, everyone is “college married." I find couples playing house when their roommates are gone for the weekend and leaving more than just their toothbrush at the boyfrined or girlfriend's place. I can't say that every college junior feels that being single is a death sentence, considering I love the single life, but it seems that once you hit that 21st birthday marker you think it's time to settle down, which is not true at all.
According to MTV.com, both Roth and Adams went to college so they have been in our shoes -- hanging with friends, going to parties, writing essays every week and sleeping in until noon on more than just the weekends. They have seen it all and decided that they would give a little insight to those who don't already know the college lifestyle. Even though both rappers are similar in flow, they differ in ideals. Asher Roth has nothing to say about his college experience, where as Sammy Adams decided to remix Roth's original lyrics to give more insight into what people love and hate about college. There is a difference between the two just as freshman and juniors differ in experience and maturity through trials and tribulations of the college experience. But I believe both grades can agree with this one:
“But my good friends is all I need! Pass out at three wake up at ten! Go out to eat then do it again. Man I love college!" -Asher Roth
