To The Freshman Living In My Old Dorm Room,
I may never meet you or know your name, but I have a couple things I want you to know. I hope you love our room. I hope you love the way you decorated it. I hope it becomes a second home because it did for me. It may be small and it may not be in the best building, but those off-white walls become home and the girls next door become family.
I officially met one of my best friends in our room and lived with another one all year. Our room will become a special place for you. This time next year, it will be a distant memory, but make sure that the memory is sweet.
When it comes to your roommate...
Treasure that person. You probably are not as easy to live with as you think you are. Be respectful. When they go to bed, turn down your music. If you get in late or wake up early, try to be as quiet as possible. Have so many Netflix marathons. Some of the best times with your roommate can involve sitting in the dark, watching Netflix for 12 hours straight. Have regular roomie dates with them at the dining hall because bonding is best over crappy tacos and ice cream. Your roommate doesn't have to be your best friend by the end of the year, but that is just a major plus.
When it comes to the winter...
Our room is best in the winter because it is the perfect temperature inside. Open the blinds, because the snow looks like a snowglobe from the safety of our room.
When it comes to your friends...
Invite them over as much as possible. Spend your weeknights laughing about Twitter or that one class that you hate. You may not think that you can fit a futon in the room, but you can, I promise. Get one, or comfy chairs. Your friends need a place to sit when they come to visit. Also, pizza at 3 am is the best bonding time.
When it comes to late night studying...
Yes, your grades are important, but don't stay up so late every night that you get yourself sick. Chunk your studying so then you aren't awake at 4 am consistently. Please don't make yourself sick over your GPA.
When it comes to pizza boxes...
It is okay to have a Leaning Tower of Pizza Boxes on your recycle bin. Eventually, you will get sick and tired of it and actually recycle them. But for the time being, they add to the decor of the room.
When it comes to your memories...
Take pictures. Take Snapchat stories. Make our room a home and treasure it. You are going to want to remember that first room in college. And you will need a bunch of new pictures to decorate your future rooms with.
I know that I've been calling the room "our room" and that's only because I think that it is still my room and it will always have a place in my heart. So please take care of it.
From,
