I literally can understand nothing of French except 's'il vous plais' and some Stromae lyrics. But don't let not understanding a language stop you from indulging in some beautiful music. I don't know if you're like this, too, but I go through phases of being obsessed with different genres and types of music, and right now it's French house/pop/modern music. Here are some of my favorites in the French Indie Pop scene as of now:
1. Stromae
Literally, any and all of this Belgian artist's music is a complete and utter masterpiece. He sings about anything from cancer (quand c’est?), his frustration of unrealistic love stories (Tous Les Memes), fatherlessness (Papaoutai), Twitter and the plight of social media (Carmen), and dancing your problems away (Alors on Danse).
2. Zaz
I don't know how else to describe her music except for super chill dance-y French music. She's best known for her work, "Je Veux".
3. Jain
This artist's music is soooo neat. She uses a lot of seamless language code-switching throughout many of her songs. Her songs and music videos are also so artfully done.
4. Vianney
Vianney has a gentle voice. Sometimes the music has a more solemn air to it, other times it has a beachy vibe going on. Here's one that has a beachy vibe.
5. Alma
Her music is great, but Spotify only has one of her songs ("Requiem") and Youtube only has a few others, so it's a little hard to find all her songs from the album. Here's a beautiful one that you can indeed easily find on Spotify!
6. Louane
This artist's music is often solemn but beautiful. She also did a duet with Charlie Puth at one point. Her music sounds heartfelt and full of life.
7. Emilie Mover
This Canadian songwriter combines the classic sounding elements from French music and makes them sound more modern. She also has had her music appear in movie and television show soundtracks.
