Freewill Vs. Destiny

Are our eyes our own?

Life is an ever winding road. Driving along our path we are confronted with choices that will shape us into the people we are. We have responsibilities and certain tasks associated with the process of what life amounts to. There is no limit to what can be accomplished. The choices that we make in life define who we are, or who we will become. The goals we pursue, the friends we surround ourselves with, right down to the expectations of our parents. Everything adds up to your personality. It adds up to your destiny.

It was in the musical "Pippin" that it was said best: “Everything has its season/ everything has its time.” Life is an ever moving entity and to become fixated on one aspect of life is to be stranded in the past. Trapped in a world that no longer exists. The wheel keeps on turning and what is the most important is to accept that life moves on. So naturally you must move on with it. To be happy and truly content it must be first accepted that nothing lasts forever. The purpose of a good life is to allow yourself to be swept away with it.

It is extremely easy to allow life to blow past you. Instead I suggest that self-discipline and pride in the overall environment of your short existence on this planet should be paramount to all other things. While it is true that we as human beings have been blessed with free will and are allowed a certain degree of ambition, I would argue that at least to a certain extent there is no such thing as free will. Rather I might offer in its place the concept of an immutable destiny.

The things that you purchase at the store were destined to be purchased by you from the moment they were made, every chicken nugget you eat came from a bird whose destiny was to feed you. Life does not always operate under such extremes, however, perhaps it can provide a shred of clarity or even comfort to the every day hustle and bustle that is human existence. The career you pursue in your life was always what you were going to do, the friends you made for however long a time always destined to be a part of your life. There is no telling what is truly up to you.

Stop and think for a moment the sheer number of variables that had to go exactly the way they did for your life to be the way it is today. In an endless universe of possibilities and variables, is it impossible to find comfort in knowing this was fate. No matter what the universe was always going to unfold this way. You were always going to be born. And you will inevitably die. Perhaps what you do with the time in between is completely up to you, or perhaps it is all up to your destiny. What really matters is that you got the chance to live.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
