Freedom Of Speech, But At What Cost?

Freedom of speech is free, but how much will you pay to have it taken from you?

Freedom Of Speech, But At What Cost?

As social media becomes more prominent in our culture, our thoughts and opinions are broadcasted for the world to see. This allows us to create communities of like-minded people, while these groups are beneficial to marginalized groups of people that do not always have a voice elsewhere.

Although social media is an amazing outlet for people to meet other people who share the same ideas, many crave for a physical group of people that they can lean on. Especially when in college it can be very hard to make friends when simply going to class and back to your dorm.

In order to meet new people, many students join groups and organizations that are hosted by their university. Some of these organizations are completely harmless and allow students to grow through leadership opportunities and their major development. This is not the case for all of them.

Many organizations force you to promise secrecy of your organization and their operations. Even when recruiting others for the organization you are not allowed to completely reveal all of the struggles that happen behind the scenes in fear of getting in trouble or jeopardizing the reputation of your organization.

This is especially relevant in organizations where you have to be asked to join. It is very hard to go against the organization that has taken you under its wing and given you a group of friends. In addition to this, you risk losing your friend group.

Which should honestly not be a fear if you a speaking up against the actions of your organization because if they are truly your friends they will continue to be your friend afterward. The ones that fade away were not truly your friends, just people that were being your friend because you paid to be a part of an organization.

Never allow money to buy your freedom of speech. If you witness something that is not okay or something you don't believe in speak up. Even if you are the only one. There is always someone else in the room that feels the same way as you but is afraid to say something. Do not allow these organizations to warp your values and your view of the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
