When In Doubt, Write It Out!

So we've all heard the phrase that writing is therapeutic, but few of us actually give the task the time of day to really make a difference in our lives. What many people don't realize is that there is an abundance of tools available to help write out our thoughts and feelings. Below, I will list a couple of great (and free!) programs to help get you started on your writing adventures. I will also provide a screenshot of what each application looks like in action.

1. Get Cold Turkey

While the name may come off as a bit strange, don't let it fool you into underestimating the value to be had. This program blocks out all other computer applications until you've reached a writing goal of your preference, effectively eliminating distractions and giving you the focus you need to reflect on the struggles or achievements happening in your life.

The basic version of this program is free for everyone and allows you to set either a word goal or writing time that you must fulfill before you can re-gain access to the rest of your computer. This may sound a bit invasive to some, but rest assured knowing that you are only bound by the limits you create. For beginners, I would recommend setting a time of about five to ten minutes to see where your mind takes you. You might be surprised by the results!

2. Focus Writer

This application blocks out background distractions like Get Cold Turkey, but allows you the option to escape should something important come up. There is a lot to love about Focus Writer, as it comes with more features than the basic edition of Get Cold Turkey. One of my favorite features is that I can set a serene image in the background behind my document while I work.

Some additional settings worth mentioning are the ability to move your mouse around the outskirts of the screen and gain access to a variety of additional tools to help with your current work in progress. These include formatting settings, writing goals, a scroll bar, and quick access to documents you've previously worked on and might want to finish. Beyond that, there is one additional feature worth mentioning. In the settings of the application, you can enable "typewriter sounds". This is my absolute favorite, as nothing is more fulfilling than the clicks and swooshes of the typewriter as you write.

3. The Most Dangerous Writing App

For those who are truly ready to commit to venting their thoughts at high speed, you can always take a stab at The Most Dangerous Writing App. Unlike the above tools, this program doesn't block out distractions. Instead, it asks you to set a goal for writing and forces you to write without stopping until you've reached that goal. The catch is that if you stop writing for five seconds before reaching that goal, everything you've typed is lost!

I would recommend only using this program for venting urgent frustrations, as there are many things that can cause your attention to drift for five seconds and you don't want any serious writing to get lost in the abyss.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
