Saving money is such a big thing when you’re in college. And not even just in college, but just in life. Especially now that we have so much free time during the summer, most of us want to go out and enjoy it while we can. Here are a few things you can do this summer that are 100 percent free on your own, or with a group of friends or family to have fun, and to just simply get out of the house more.

1. Go On A Hike

There are places you can hike around in, or even out of your local area. Or you could also go on a cool picturesque walk. Find new places where you can walk, or hike. Find different paths, and search for different places to go. Challenge yourself to work out muscles you haven’t in awhile. You may not anticipate the workout, but it’s great to get some exercise. Don’t forget to take water with you. But overall, if you get to the view at the top, it’s just the best reward, and you can even get an Instagram photo while you’re at it.

2. Have A Photo Shoot

If you’re sitting around with friends, and don’t really know what to do, have a fun photo shoot with them. Just get dolled up. Put on your favorite outfit. Figure out what kind of photo shoot you want to do. Bump up music. And take some pictures! And it’s even equally as fun uploading the pictures later on, after you’ve had a fun photo shoot and everything. Even going through, picking out your favorites, and then editing them together! It’s just so much fun.

3. Backyard Bonfire

Blast music on some speakers. Get a bunch of snacks and drinks. Make a Facebook group or a group chat and invite your friends or family members over. And even if you don’t have a bonfire pit, maybe one of your friends do. This is a really good time to catch up with everyone and see how’s everyone’s doing. And it’s so relaxing and laid back.

4. Bike Ride

Go with a friend. If you live around a lake, I suggest going there too. Near or after the peak of the sun, so it’s not as hot. And you could even catch dinner afterwards if you want. Or make an Ice Cream run to cool down a bit. But most importantly, don’t forget the H2O, because it does get hot.

5. Sunset Picnic

Make a picnic with friends, or go to the beach at sunset. Have your food. Have your drinks. Bring your speakers for that upbeat vibe. Or you can just have a chill vibe and listen to the breeze, lake or ocean.

6. Visit Local Fairs or Markets

Research on where your local flea markets or fairs are in the area. Or a reasonable drive time. Check out an Art Fair, looking around at the different local artist in your area, or Farms Market on a Sunday, where you can buy some fruits and vegetables. Or you can buy some stuff at the Flee Market if you want. Go out with a friend, in the morning, and grab some coffee. And spend the morning there. It’s fun to look around at things. Chit Chat with people, and just try on clothes and have fun!

7. Night Games

Pick a night. And do night games. Establish what game you wanna play. A popular one is Capture the Flag. Keep the area small tho, so you’re not running around everywhere. Or keep the area big, your preference. But get a bunch of people together, because the more people you have, the better. And just have some fun.

8. Throwback Game Night

Play early 90’s or 00’s board games with family or friends. Sorry. Clue. All these board games you have lying around the house are so much fun to play with. Have a throwback game night. Have some snacks and drinks for everyone to enjoy.

9. Movie Marathon Slumber Party

Do a throwback Disney Channel movie marathon. Or just play your favorite movie series if you want. Play On Demand movies, or any Netflix movie. Just a very chill and kick back night, alone, or with some friends and family.

10. Catch a Game

Go to a baseball game, or a soccer game. Or any sports game that you know of that’s going on in the summer. You can check out the local ones in the area, which are mostly free. Or you can pay and go to a professional one. Either way, it’s really fun to watch. You can even bring a friend, your food, and just enjoy the game. Maybe even call dibs on who’s going to win, or have the most strikeouts, things like that!

When it comes to Bloomington-Normal, there are many outstanding factors that any Illinois State student can say are unique to our college town (and maybe others too). Proud or not, we Redbirds know all the ins and outs of Blono.

1. The wait for Buffalo Wild Wings is always going to be long on Thursday nights.

As hard as we try, it's nearly impossible to resist the 69-cent wings on a college student budget. Plus, they are always delicious!
