Whether you're living here or commuting, New York City can get expensive. If you want to have a good time in the city without breaking the bank this summer, there are a whole host of events that you can do every day.
1. Movies in the park
From "Movies Under the Stars" in Queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx, to "Films on the Green" in Manhattan to "HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival," there are plenty of opportunities to lay out a blanket, bring a picnic for dinner and watch a wide range of movies to unwind after a long day of work or sightseeing. 2. Concerts in the park
If movies aren't your thing, you can check out this list of free summer concerts. The Metropolitan Opera will also host six free concerts this summer, which you can read more about here.
3. Shakespeare in the park
Really like parks but not so into music or movies? You can always make your English teacher happy and see a production of a Shakespeare play in Central Park. This year there is a production of "The Taming of the Shrew" from May 26–June 26 and a production of "Trollus and Cressida" from July 19–Aug. 14. 4. Brooklyn Botanical Gardens
For passionate botanists, the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens offers free admission all day every Tuesday and most Saturday's from 10 to noon. On any other day, admissions for students with a valid student ID is only $6.
5. Kayaking on the Hudson
Pier 26 offers free kayaks on the Hudson River on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7:30 p.m. as well as 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
6. Ping pong in Bryant Park
If you're working in Midtown Manhattan, you can spend your lunch break by playing a game of ping pong. You can sign up for a 10-minute time slot, or spend an evening participating in one of their singles, doubles or themed tournaments. You can find out more information here.
7. Stargazing at Lincoln Center
Every Friday and Saturday night, the Amateur Astronomers Association sets up telescopes at the fountain of Lincoln Center from sundown until 11 p.m. through the end of July.
8. Target First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museum of Art
The Brooklyn Museum of Art celebrates the first Saturday of every month by waiving its admissions cost and opening the museum up to the public from 5 to 11 p.m. Those of age can enjoy a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m., and anyone can enjoy the art and entertainment.
9. Open mic comedy night at the Alligator Lounge
Not only is the open mic at Alligator Lounge free to attend on Thursday nights, but it also includes free pizza. You can a find a complete list of all of the Brooklyn bar's events here.
10. Volleyball at Brooklyn Bridge Park
There's nothing like some friendly competition. Grab some friends and play a game or two. The full list of court availability can be found here.
11. Bushwick Flea Market
If you like shopping, make your way over to Wyckoff Avenue in Brooklyn for the Bushwick Flea Market every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
12. Sunrise: Abhaya Yoga
If you're an early riser, you can do yoga at Pier 6 at 7:30 a.m. from June 6 to July 25. Pre-registration is required, so make sure to arrive at seven to sign up.
13. Videology Movie Trivia
If you are 21+ and think that you know all there is to know about movie trivia, head over to Videology Bar & Cinema on Tuesday nights at 8:30 p.m.
14. The Bronx Zoo
Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Bronx Zoo waives its admission charge and enacts a pay what you want system.
15. Queens Night Market
Every Saturday night through Aug. 20, Queens is home to an international open air night market featuring crafts, food and performers.
16. Smorgasburg
If you or your friends live in the metro New York area, your pictures of food from Smorgasburg have undoubtably made their way into your Snapchat and Instagram feeds. Every Saturday at Williamsburg's East River State Park, different food vendors from around the city meet in one place to make a very delicious afternoon.
17. Moonlight Bike Ride
On the first Friday of every month, you can take a lovely bike ride around Central Park. It meets at Columbus Circle at 10 p.m. Take some friends and say goodbye to the week while also saying goodbye to calories.
