In October 2014 Kesha filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke for sexual harassment, rape, emotional, and physical abuse. He tormented Kesha with criticism about her weight and drover her into an eating disorder. She emitted herself into a rehabilitation center to make herself better. Which is how she realized she needed to file a lawsuit.
So Last week a New York judge denied Kesha the access that would let her make new music outside of her Sony record label and be forced to still work with her perpetuator Dr. Luke. Kesha simply wanted to leave the contract so she could make music for her fans again. Also get over the trauma that Dr. Luke had caused her. Kesha went through it all over the span of 10 years, but Dr. Luke has still managed to deny all the accusations. Sony has let her work with another producer for her music, but Kesha wants to back to her old ways of creating music without Dr. Luke.
So why is this case important?
Well many people have called Kesha out to be the liar of this specific case because she cannot back it up with evidence. As the audience we are seeing victim-blaming, disbelief and public shaming. Also we are ranking that a man's needs are worth more than a woman's. Dr. Luke messed with Kesha's mental health and he should not be allowed to work within the vicinity of others. This case voices the silenced struggle of many rape victims. Though, the court should have obviously chosen a different settlement.
Kesha's case voices how little the music industry really cares for female pop artists. The industry only builds these wonderful talented people to target them. Kesha initially had her life planned out, she has nearly perfect S.A.T. scores to get into the college she wanted. Then a music producer approached her and promise all the glitz and glamour of hollywood. So she moved out to LA where the once mentor she had, ended up becoming her abuser.
Now Kesha has many female artists and fans supporting her movement #FreeKesha. Which is going to be eye opening for the music industry because it will show the men dominating wholesale control over the female pop artists they represent. Time for the women to take back their talents and make their own music for themselves not for others.
