In modern times, Greek life gets a reputation of being only for parties and "fratty" things such as destroying the neighborhood. In fact, new media such as the movie series “The Neighbors” have given way to a generalization that isn't true for all fraternities and sororities. Whether a fraternity fits the stereotype of the generalization is honestly extremely different from chapter to chapter and college to college. For example, larger colleges tend to have a smaller percentage of the population in Greek life compared to a small school's percentages of participation. Larger schools are also larger chapters and therefore can be less personal and more click-supportive. There are also downfalls to a small school chapter such as getting a house to call your meeting place and home.
Even though there are many issues with fraternities at times, I believe that the negatives will be dwarfed by the amount of good that comes out of brotherhood. I can speak on a personal account of how all of the good things have improved me as a man, and as a member of our society.
One of the biggest things I have taken away from being a Greek is the community. Although we do compete against each other in Greek week and for members, all of Greek life supports one another. Whether it be a member of that chapter who is in the hospital or stealing the oven knobs from each other's houses (tough love), we have fun and create a community to rely on. Within our own fraternity, we love the system of big and little brothers. I myself have three big brothers and they all bring incredibly different attributes to the table. Between the three big brothers I feel like I have someone who watches over me, someone to talk to about big life decisions, and someone to always have a good laugh with. All of my brothers would be there for me in a heartbeat and it's a great security knowing that.
Another often undermined part of fraternities is our commitment to the community. We are required by the university we attend and our teachings to accept an attitude of good will. Fraternities are a large face of community service and we love to do it too! If you're curious where to attain help and there is a higher educational institution around you, don't be afraid to ask a fraternity!
Fraternities are an important factor to society because they teach young people to be a human being first. Above all, we are humans and through the spread of brotherly love we can hopefully have a great impact on the world.
