Its seems, just from a glance, that the world, your friends, even social media, has gone quiet for the night. Maybe they have been muted by the beautiful vocals of one singing from a crooked point of view. But it's more likely this quietness is the cause of people listening more than speaking their opinion. It's one of those rare moments. Where the average persons puts in their headphones so that they can listen; all at the same time.
It seems that Frank Ocean is that type of guy. It seems once again the power of music allows a crooked society to pay attention to what one outside the norm has to say. Frank has a voice that is as sweet as honey. A voice that seems to wrap every social, political, emotions, mental, and spiritual experience in honey making it a pill that the everyday person can swallow. Most people fall in love with this R&B/Soul/Pop artist in the most oblivious and genuine way and it's beautiful. Cause most don't fall in love with the typical African American. Most do not fall in love with a homosexual African American who balances a display of black masculinity with a delicate feminism. Hence the rocking of mascara in your first music video in four years while holding a picture of the fallen Trayvon Martin within the next scene.
For those who are lovers of poetry, his lyrical display of spoken word is inspirational. For those infatuated with his sound his album, Blonde, is a refreshing wave as we prepare to enter into a new season. His music becomes a veil and a mirror; causing you to face emotions you may never have and to become an adult so as to intake the complicated messages being sent. Maybe it's in the packaging of his work. Because there was no lead single in the year of 2016, just a visual album on a Friday and 17 track project the day after. But the feeling is similar to when he had a single four years ago. While the Channel Orange was the introduction to a musical star, you left feeling that you knew a bit more about yourself and Frank himself because there was pieces you could relate to; if not he whole thing.
So it seems as if Frank Ocean is the next creative thing. But he is not the same as others. And his blonde album may not be the same as others. Because Frank represents, or portrays himself, as a combination of almost everyone in america. With love as the sauce on the side it is easy to be reminded about the human side we all posses. The flaws we all deal with in and out of time. He's viewed as a human while staying a minority. He remains a lover despite his sexual preferences. He remains an artist without sticking to the script but yet has the melodies you hear from Drake mixed with Corrine Bailey Rae.
I still don't know his intentions. Nor do I know if he understands his influence of his voice (social media tends to distill the yearn of music). But at least on this Saturday night it is quiet enough to heard the waves of our complicated thoughts.
